Width is flotation. As rough conventions: around 85-95 mm underfoot is all-mountain, 100-110 mm is freeride, and 110-plus is a dedicated powder ski. In deep snow, wider planes earlier, turns with less effort and forgives more - which is why fat skis help intermediates most of all. Hire them at the destination; your all-mountain pair is for everything else.
What do waist widths actually mean?
The number that matters is the waist - the ski's width underfoot, in millimetres. Treat these as typical categories rather than hard rules, because brands draw the lines differently:
- Around 85-95 mm: all-mountain. Happy on piste, workable in shallow soft snow, the ski most people own.
- Around 100-110 mm: freeride. The do-everything-off-piste band - real float in fresh snow, still civilised on the way back to the lift.
- 110 mm and up: powder. Built for deep days and not much else. Slow edge to edge on hardpack, effortless where it is deep.
They are conventions, not specifications - a heavily rockered 108 can out-float a flat 112, which is why shape matters alongside width.
How does float actually work?
Powder behaves less like a surface and more like a fluid. A ski moving through it is supported by the snow it compresses beneath itself, and how high it rides depends on speed, surface area and how the ski spreads your weight. Loosely, it is the same physics as a boat coming onto the plane: enough speed over enough surface and you ride on top instead of ploughing through.
A wider ski has more surface area, so it planes earlier and at lower speed. That means less time waiting for the ski to surface, less pace required before it starts working, and tips that stay up instead of diving.
Why is wider actually easier for intermediates?
The persistent myth says fat skis are an expert's tool. In deep snow it is exactly backwards:
- Less effort per turn. A ski riding high in the snow pivots with your legs, not against the whole snowpack. By day three of a trip this is the difference between skiing and surviving.
- No back-seat survival lean. Narrow skis in powder tempt you to lean back to keep the tips up, which torches your quads and wrecks your technique. Fat skis let you stand centred, the way you were taught.
- Forgiveness. Deep snow punishes a dived tip with a fall, and falls at depth are exhausting. More float means fewer tip dives, fewer crashes and more energy left for the afternoon.
Experts can make anything work. Intermediates are the ones a fat ski genuinely transforms.
What does rocker do?
Rocker is a tip - sometimes a tail too - that rises earlier and more gradually than on a traditional ski. In powder it works like extra length you do not have to steer: the tip is already planing before the rest of the ski arrives, and the ski pivots more freely because less of it is locked in the snow. Most modern off-piste skis pair a rockered tip with camber underfoot, and for deep snow that combination is the point - float in front, grip beneath.
Why hire fat skis at the destination?
- Airline ski luggage is a cost and a risk in both directions, and a powder ski flown home is dead weight for the rest of your season.
- Heli and cat operations, and good destination shops, commonly supply modern fat skis matched to their snow - and the guides know the fleet.
- Powder skis are a some-days tool. Hiring means you ski the right width for that week's conditions instead of the one width you own.
- Trying widths on real trip snow is the only honest way to learn what you like before you ever spend money on one.
When is your all-mountain ski genuinely fine?
Plenty of the time. If the fresh snow is boot-deep rather than knee-deep, a modern all-mountain ski with a rockered tip floats well enough. Resort powder mornings that are tracked out by lunch, storm laps in the trees, firm snow between storms, side-country day trips - your 90-ish ski handles all of it, and it will beat a powder ski for the second half of the day once the fresh is gone.
The fat ski earns its keep when the snow is deep, untracked and repeated, day after day - which is exactly the situation you hire it for.
