No single goggle lens covers both a bluebird day and a whiteout, because a lens trades light transmission against glare control. VLT (visible light transmission) tells you the split: roughly 5-20% for full sun, 25-50% for mixed cloud, 60% and up for storms and trees. The low-light lens is the one that saves you - buy it first, carry it always, and treat the dark lens as the luxury.
What does VLT actually mean?
VLT is visible light transmission - the percentage of visible light the lens lets through to your eyes. It is the one number on a goggle box that means something concrete. Low VLT (roughly 5-20%) blocks glare on full-sun days. Mid VLT (about 25-50%) suits broken cloud and mixed light. High VLT (60% and up, running to nearly clear) gathers every scrap of light in storms, fog and timber. Lens colour names are marketing; VLT is the spec. Check it before you check anything else.
Why does the flat-light lens matter more than the sunny one?
On a bluebird day, the wrong lens makes you squint. In flat light, the wrong lens makes terrain disappear. Overcast sky scatters light evenly, shadows vanish, and shadows are the only way your eyes read snow: rollers, compressions, wind lips, sastrugi, the edge of a cat track. A dark lens in a whiteout removes what little contrast remains, and you find the terrain with your knees.
The sunny lens fixes discomfort. The storm lens fixes blindness. That is not a symmetrical trade, and it is why the high-VLT lens is the one to spend on. In the trees on a storm day, a yellow or rose high-VLT tint pulls the shadows back out of the snow and turns guesswork into skiing.
Storm lenses vs bluebird lenses
- Storm and low light: high VLT, typically yellow, rose or near-clear tints designed to amplify contrast rather than block light.
- Bluebird: low VLT, dark grey or brown bases, often mirrored, built to kill glare off open snow.
- All-round: the mid-VLT compromise most goggles ship with. Fine on mixed days, mediocre at both extremes - which is exactly when you care.
Are photochromic lenses the answer?
Sometimes. Photochromic lenses darken with UV exposure and lighten as it fades, covering a wide VLT range in one lens. The caveats are real: they respond to UV rather than to brightness, so they can sit darker than you want under thin cloud where UV stays high, and the transition takes time - cold slows some formulations further. For a rider who refuses to carry a spare, a quality photochromic is the best single-lens compromise going. It is still a compromise at both ends of the range, and it will not out-perform a dedicated storm lens in a whiteout.
Interchangeable systems and spare-lens habits
Magnetic and clip-in lens systems have turned a swap from surgery into a car-park job. The system only works if your habits do:
- Carry the spare, always. A spare lens at home is a paperweight; the weather does not consult your forecast reading.
- Keep it in a rigid case or thick sleeve, padded, where it cannot be crushed or scratched.
- Swap somewhere sheltered when you can, handle the lens by its edges, and never lay the inner face down on anything.
- Decide at the trailhead based on the sky in front of you, not in a lift line with snow already landing on the lens.
If your goggle does not take interchangeable lenses, the answer is two goggles: one dark, one light. Less elegant, equally effective.
Should you run polarised lenses on snow?
Carefully, if at all. Polarisation cuts reflected glare, which is glorious on water and roads and a mixed blessing on snow, because that same glare is how you spot ice. The tell-tale sheen off a scraped, refrozen patch can vanish through a polarised lens, and you meet the ice with your edges instead of your eyes. Polarised lenses can also make some LCD screens hard to read at certain angles. Some riders like them for spring glare off wet snow; for variable conditions, most experienced riders skip polarisation and get their definition from high-contrast tints instead.
