The Technique

  1. Start by counting the day backwards from the bracket. Work out how many runs you will make if you go all the way: practice sessions, qualifying attempts, then each tandem round where you lead once and chase once, plus any re-runs. That number, not optimism, sets your tyre and fuel plan. Most drivers plan for the day they expect rather than the day they want, then find themselves in the top eight with one set of rears and no fuel. Write the run count on the boot lid or a whiteboard where the whole crew can see it, and update it as the bracket resolves.
  2. Tyre strategy is the single biggest decision of the day and it is made in the morning. Decide which set goes on for qualifying, which sets are for battles, and which scrubbed set is for warm-up, then mark them with a paint pen so nobody guesses under pressure. Your best set goes on for qualifying, because seeding decides who you meet and that shapes everything after. Check the rears after every single run, not for tread but for cords, chunking, blistering and heat marbling on the shoulder, because a rear that looks fine standing still can be a run away from letting go at the outer zone. Fronts do the steering and the saving, so they never get demoted to whatever is left. If you are running short on rears, say so out loud to your crew and change how you drive, since preserving tyres is a driving decision as much as a strategy one.
