GEAR DECISIONS: CAR, SAFETY KIT AND THE SIM RIG

After this lesson you can choose a first drift car, spend your budget in the order that actually makes you faster, understand the honest case for and against a welded diff, and set up a sim rig that trains real skills.
The Technique
- **The first car: low power, rear wheel drive, well supported.** Rear wheel drive is the requirement. Low power is the choice most people get wrong. A modest car forces you to carry momentum, time the clutch kick, and use weight transfer to keep the car lit, and those are the skills that make a driver. Power papers over all of it, then charges you in tyres, drivetrain parts and repair time. Choose a platform with a large local community and a supply of cheap secondhand parts, because you will break things and the difference between a good season and a wasted one is whether the part is on a shelf nearby. Buy either a clean stock car or a genuinely well sorted build, and walk away from half finished projects, because you will pay twice to undo someone else's decisions. Check the shell for rust and accident repair before you look at the engine bay, because a bent or rotten shell is the one thing you cannot fix cheaply.
- **The diff, honestly.** An open diff is useless for drifting because it sends drive to the unloaded wheel. A welded diff locks both rear wheels solidly, is the cheapest option by a long way, and is completely predictable on track, which is why so many people run it. The road warning is real and it is not squeamishness: a welded car binds and chirps in tight low speed turns, wears rear tyres, loads the driveline, and in the wet it will step out with far less warning than an open or limited slip car. In many Australian jurisdictions it is also a defect and a roadworthy failure, and it can complicate an insurance claim. A clutch type limited slip diff, particularly a two way, gives you drift behaviour with road manners, is adjustable and rebuildable, and costs real money and periodic maintenance. Helical and torque sensing diffs are pleasant on the road and unhelpful when a wheel unloads, so they are not a drift answer. The clean decision: track only or trailered car, weld it and put the saved money into the seat and tyres. Car you drive on the road, buy the clutch type diff and treat it as a safety purchase.
- **Angle and steering geometry.** More steering lock lets you hold bigger angles and catch bigger mistakes, and it is not the first thing you need. Modifying the steering changes Ackermann, scrub radius, bump steer and roll centre all at once, and a badly chosen or badly installed kit makes a car twitchy, wears tyres unevenly and can break a steering component, which is the worst failure on a drift track. Most beginners do not need more angle, they need to stop overdriving the entry. When you do go there, treat the whole corner as a package: knuckles, tie rods, correcting the roll centre after the lift, and an alignment from someone who has set up drift cars before. Extra caster helps the wheel self steer and gives you the fast hands you want. Steering parts are the one place in the build where you buy quality and you do not improvise.
- **Coilovers and dampers.** Suspension exists to control weight transfer, not to lower the car. Cheap coilovers pair a stiff spring with a damper that cannot control it, so the car skips over bumps, the rear grip becomes unpredictable, and you never learn what the car is telling you. What matters is damper valving matched to the spring rate, enough remaining travel at your ride height, and a sensible roll centre. A good used set of quality coilovers is a better buy than a new cheap set every time. Keep travel, resist slamming the car, and remember that worn bushes, ball joints and steering components make every other setting a guess. Do the tired old parts before the fancy new ones.
- **The seat and harness come before power.** A fixed back bucket seat that fits you and a correctly mounted harness are driving equipment first and safety equipment second. Held firmly, your hands and feet do only steering and pedal work instead of bracing your body, and your inputs get noticeably more accurate straight away. Mounting is everything: the seat needs proper rails or side mounts to reinforced floor points, and a harness needs a harness bar or cage mount with the correct shoulder strap angle, never a bolt into a parcel shelf or a strap looped around a stock seat. Understand the trade before you fit one, because a multi point harness in an uncaged car holds your torso rigidly and can be worse than the factory belt in some impacts, and many club events reflect this in their rules. Harnesses carry a stamped date and expire, so check it. If your budget is tight, a proper seat and the correct mounting beats another power upgrade in every measurable way.
- **Helmets: which standard, and open or full face.** Motorsport helmet standards differ from motorcycle standards in ways that matter in a car: motorsport ratings include fire resistance and testing for impacts against a roll bar, and motorcycle ratings do not. Australian motorsport events publish a list of accepted standards and it changes over time, so check what your event accepts before you buy rather than after. Full face gives fire and face protection and the ability to run a visor, and it is the sensible default in a car that could catch fire. Open face gives better peripheral vision and comfort, which is why it stays popular for tandem work, and you are trading away face protection to get it. Fit matters more than the label: the helmet should be tight enough that the skin on your forehead moves with it, and it should not rock when you push it. Replace it after any real impact and respect the expiry date, because the liner ages whether you crash or not.
- **Fire extinguisher and the rest of the scrutineering list.** Fire is the realistic emergency in a drift car, because you have oil near hot exhaust, fuel lines that have been moved, and a lot of heat with no airflow at low speed. Buy an extinguisher of a type suited to fuel and electrical fires, in a size that will actually do something, and mount it in a metal bracket with a quick release, bolted through the floor with backing plates, within your reach while belted in. An extinguisher on the passenger floor is useless and becomes a missile in an impact. Around it sits the rest of the list that scrutineers check for good reason: a properly clamped battery, no fluid leaks, a catch can, a working master cut off where required, front and rear tow points, a bonnet that stays shut, and a cabin cleared of every loose item.
- **Tyre strategy for a day.** Fronts and rears are different purchases. Fronts are your grip and your steering, so run good tyres with real tread there and never put worn ones on the front to save money. Rears are consumables, so hard compound used tyres from a tyre shop are the standard answer, and getting a mix of sizes that fit your rims widens your options. Plan for more rears than you think for your first event, because early on you spin, flat spot and destroy tyres in ways you will not later. Run higher pressures than road use to protect the sidewall and reduce the chance of rolling a bead off the rim, and check them between sessions because they build heat fast. The genuine quality of life upgrade is a set of spare rims with tyres already mounted, plus a jack, a rattle gun or breaker bar and a compressor, so a tyre change costs you a few minutes instead of a session.
- **The sim rig as real training equipment.** A sim will not teach you fear, tyre temperature or what the car feels like through your body, and it teaches sequence, timing, lines and eyes up habits better than anything else you can buy for the money. It is also the only way to practise tandem lines and proximity without risking two cars. What matters in the hardware: force feedback quality, because you are learning to feel the moment grip breaks and belt or gear driven wheels blur exactly that moment, while a direct drive wheel gives you the detail; rotation range, because you need at least the lock a real car has, which is more than two full turns lock to lock, and you need the wheel to keep up when you catch a slide; a clutch pedal you can actually kick and a handbrake you can grab, since those are the inputs you are drilling. Above all, mounting rigidity: a wheel clamped to a desk flexes under load and teaches you to fight the rig instead of the car. A rigid frame with a fixed seat in a real driving position is worth more than a more expensive wheel bolted to something that moves.
Common Mistakes
Buying power first. Fix: seat, harness, tyres, diff and dampers in that order, and add power only when the car is no longer the limiting factor.
- Welding the diff in a daily driven car without understanding the consequences. Fix: if it stays registered and drives on wet roads, fit a clutch type limited slip diff instead, and know the defect risk before you decide.
- Fitting an angle kit to fix an entry problem. Fix: get coaching or seat time on entry speed first, since most angle problems are timing problems.
- Running worn tyres on the front to save money. Fix: best rubber on the front always, consumables on the rear.
- A loose fire extinguisher and an unmounted battery. Fix: bracket the extinguisher within reach through the floor, clamp the battery, and clear every loose item from the cabin before every session.
- Treating the sim as a game rather than training. Fix: pick one skill per session, run the same corner repeatedly, and stop when you stop improving.
The Drill
Do a pre event audit with the car on stands. Check each front wheel for play at the top and bottom and at the tie rod. Then sit in the car with the helmet on and the harness done up as tight as you will run it, and without looking, reach the extinguisher, the handbrake, the cut off switch and the ignition. Anything you cannot reach gets remounted before the next event, not after. Finish by checking the stamped dates on the harness and the helmet, and writing both on a card in the glovebox so you never argue with a scrutineer about it. Then take the same corner on the sim for twenty minutes, changing one input at a time, and note which change actually improved the exit.
Safety gear only works fitted, mounted and in date. A helmet must be snug enough to move your scalp, and it is finished after a real impact or when the liner has aged out. A harness that is expired, sun faded or frayed at the adjusters is replaced, not tightened. The seat and harness mounts must go into reinforced structure with backing plates, and a multi point harness belongs in a car with a proper harness bar or cage rather than bolted to whatever was handy. The non negotiable list for track drifting is a fitted helmet to the standard your event accepts, a correctly mounted seat and belt system, a reachable extinguisher, a clamped battery, no leaks and an empty cabin. Above all, treat a welded diff on a public road as a real change in how the car behaves in the wet, because that is the failure that happens off track.
