QUALIFYING: BUILDING THE PERFECT SOLO RUN

The point
After this lesson you can build a qualifying run as a deliberate sequence of decisions made before you drive, and repeat it under one-shot pressure instead of improvising it.

The Technique
- A qualifying run is a constructed performance, not a lap. Before you drive it you should be able to say out loud, in order, every decision the run contains: braking reference, gear, initiation reference, how much rotation you want on arrival at the outer zone, where the throttle goes flat, where the transition happens, and where you straighten. If any of those is still a feel rather than a decision, that is the part of the run that will vary when your heart rate is up. Reverse-engineer the run from the judges: stand where each judge stands during the course walk, look at what they can and cannot see, and work out which zone carries the most weight. Then decide what the headline of your run is going to be, because you cannot make every corner the biggest one.
- The entry is most of the run and speed is judged where it cannot be faked. Judges assess entry speed at initiation and through the first outer zone, and the difference between drivers there is rarely bravery on the brake pedal. It is how much speed the initiation method costs. A handbrake entry is repeatable and easy to place, and it scrubs speed every time you pull it. A clutch kick with weight transfer preserves more speed but demands the weight already be moving. The fastest entries you will see are usually a braking and feint combination, where the car is unsettled toward the outside before the initiation so the rotation is being helped by the load transfer rather than created from nothing. Choosing that method is the decision that sets the ceiling on your whole run.
