CHOOSING A SKI: STAND-UP AND RUNABOUT BRAND CHARACTER

After this lesson you can tell a stand-up from a runabout in purpose rather than shape, understand who builds what and why, and decide honestly between buying new, buying used, or building on a proven platform.
The Technique
- Start with the honest frame. No manufacturer, importer, dealer or parts maker pays us, and none has influenced this lesson. Personal watercraft split into two worlds that share very little beyond the word ski, and the first job is knowing which world you want to live in. Model ranges change every year and availability in Australia changes with them, so use this for brand character and then go and ride the current machine and check local support before you buy.
- Understand the split. A stand-up ski is built to be ridden on your feet, with a handlepole, a tray you kneel or stand in, and a hull designed to be thrown around, submarined, spun and landed on. That is the freestyle and freeride world. A runabout is a seated machine built for speed, range, comfort and carrying people, with a hull designed to track and to handle chop. Runabouts dominate the market by volume by a wide margin, and stand-ups are a small, specialised corner of it. Buying the wrong side of that split is the single most expensive mistake in the category.
- Know how few manufacturers build stand-ups. The production stand-up market is served by a very small number of names. Yamaha has kept the SuperJet badge alive across decades and generations and remains the reference point for most riders coming into the sport; the trade-off is that the current machine is built to be a broadly usable production ski rather than a competition freestyle platform out of the crate. Kawasaki holds the deepest heritage in stand-ups, having largely created the category, and its current large-capacity ski has a loyal following among freeride and racing riders; the trade-off is weight and size, which some freestyle riders find works against them. Alongside these sit smaller specialist builders including the Australian company Krash, along with names such as Rickter and Bullet that supply hulls and complete builds to the freestyle and freeride scene; the reward is a machine designed from the first line for the discipline, and the trade-off is limited production, higher cost per unit and a support picture that depends on the builder rather than on a national dealer network.
- Know the runabout field. Sea-Doo, from BRP, offers the broadest range of hulls and feature sets and has a reputation for innovation in control and convenience features; the trade-off is that a feature-rich machine is a more complex machine to own and to service. Yamaha builds runabouts with a reputation for a distinctive hull and drivetrain approach and has a strong following for how its machines feel at speed; the trade-off is a range structure that does not always offer the precise combination a buyer wants. Kawasaki brings the oldest name in the category and a following for its performance-focused runabouts; the trade-off is a narrower model range than its rivals in many markets. Newer and boutique entrants exist too, and they can offer real character, with the trade-off being availability and parts logistics. Riders who prioritise touring and passengers tend to look at the broad ranges, and riders who prioritise handling tend to shortlist on hull, not on badge.
- Understand hull philosophy, because it decides how the machine feels far more than power does. In stand-ups, hull volume, rocker, chine shape and where the buoyancy sits govern whether the ski wants to sit high and spin freely, or track straight and hold a carve. A low-volume, heavily rockered freestyle hull is easy to submarine and rotate and hard work to ride in a straight line across chop. A flatter, higher-volume hull is stable, forgiving and easier to learn on, and it resists the tricks a freestyle rider wants. In runabouts the same logic applies to chines, strakes and deadrise, which trade straight-line stability and dry ride against how hard the machine will lean and turn.
- Understand engines and pumps as a system. The pump, not the engine, is what puts power in the water. Impeller pitch, pump shoe, ride plate, intake grate and nozzle setup change acceleration, hook-up in aerated water and how the ski behaves on landings, and a well matched pump on modest power will out-ride a big engine feeding a poorly matched pump. Naturally aspirated engines are simpler and more forgiving to own; supercharged engines add real speed and add service demands, heat and fuel quality requirements. Two-stroke platforms remain the backbone of the freestyle scene because they are light and easy to work on, and the current production stand-ups are four-stroke, which changes weight, service pattern and how the ski feels in the air.
- Accept how much of a freestyle ski is aftermarket. This is the part nobody says clearly at a dealership. A competitive freestyle ski typically ends up as a mix of hull, aftermarket handlepole and steering, aftermarket tray and footholds, aftermarket exhaust and ignition, aftermarket pump components, a custom hood, and a great deal of foam, grip and rework. In practice you are assembling a machine from a parts ecosystem, not buying a finished product. The reward is that you can build precisely the ski you want and repair it piece by piece forever. The trade-off is that budget planning must include the build, and a cheap starting hull with an expensive build list is not a cheap ski.
- Weigh Australian availability and support properly. Runabout support here is broad, with dealers, parts and service in most coastal centres. Stand-up support is far thinner and concentrated around a small scene, which cuts both ways: fewer dealers, but a knowledgeable and generous community, and an Australian builder in the freestyle space is a genuine advantage for parts and advice. Before you buy anything, find out who services it near you, what they can get and how quickly, and whether the trailer, the tow vehicle, the ramp access and the storage all actually work for you.
- Decide between new, used and building, using your own honest use case. Buy new if you want a warranty, a dealer relationship and a machine you will ride hard but not modify heavily, and accept that you pay for that peace of mind. Buy used if you want more machine for the money and you accept the homework, which means a full inspection, a compression check by someone who knows the platform, a look for corrosion and hull repairs, and a hard look at service history. Build from a proven platform if you want a freestyle ski that fits you, and only if you enjoy the workshop as much as the water. Whichever way you go, ride or at least sit on the machine first, confirm what the current model year actually is, and check parts and service support locally before money changes hands.
Common Mistakes
Buying a runabout because it is cheaper, when what you wanted was freestyle. Fix: define the discipline first, then shop, because the two hull families cannot be swapped later.
- Underestimating the build budget on a used freestyle project. Fix: price the full parts list before you buy the hull and add a contingency, then decide if a more complete ski is actually the cheaper path.
- Chasing engine power while ignoring the pump. Fix: get the pump, impeller and ride plate matched to your weight and use before you spend anything on more power.
- Skipping the used inspection because the seller seemed genuine. Fix: pay someone who knows the platform to look at compression, corrosion and hull repairs, and treat that fee as part of the purchase price.
- Ignoring the logistics around the ski. Fix: check trailer, tow capacity, ramp access, storage and freshwater flushing before you fall in love with a machine.
The Drill
Before buying, do a support and platform audit. List your two shortlisted machines. For each, ring the nearest dealer or builder and ask three questions: what common parts do you hold today, what is the lead time on a pump or hull part, and who locally services this platform. Then arrange to ride both, and after each ride score five things out of five - how quickly it got up to speed, how it felt in chop, how easy it was to remount in deep water, how tired you were after twenty minutes, and how confident you felt at the limit. Add up the build cost to get each machine to the state you actually want it in, and compare totals rather than sticker prices.
A ski that suits your weight, strength and skill is safer than one that does not, because most trouble on the water starts with fatigue or a machine you cannot place where you intended. Setup and servicing outrank badge every time: a sound hull, a correctly matched pump, a working lanyard, fresh fuel, a flush after every salt session and a machine serviced on schedule matter more than which name is on the side. Wear an approved vest and an impact vest for freestyle work, ride with someone, and check the current model year and local support before you buy.
