LOOKING AHEAD: VISION ON TRAIL
5 min · Free lesson · written lesson, video in production
The point
After this lesson your eyes work ahead of the bike, so the trail stops surprising you.
The Technique
- At speed, your eyes live two to three seconds down the trail. The faster you go, the further ahead that is.
- Scan far, then near, then far again. A moving scan, not a stare.
- You go where you look. Target fixation is real: stare at the rock and you will hit the rock. Look at the line beside it.
- Trust your peripheral vision to handle the front wheel. It is better at it than your direct gaze.
- Head up when it gets rough. The moment your eyes drop, you are reacting late to everything.
- In corners, turn your head and look through to the exit before you get there.
Common Mistakes
Staring at the front wheel. Fix: pick a marker ahead and call it out loud.
- Fixating on the scary obstacle. Fix: name your line out loud - "left of the rock, over the root".
- Eyes dropping as you tire. Fix: treat head-up as a checklist item every few minutes.
The Drill
An easy trail you know well. Ride it calling out what you see three seconds ahead: "root, left rut, berm". Then ride it again slightly faster, same calls.
Non-negotiables
Do vision drills on trails below your limit. The point is spare attention, not survival.
