RACE SETUP: SUSPENSION, TYRES AND COCKPIT FOR SPEED

After this lesson you can run your own setup as a proper test programme: a recorded baseline, one variable at a time, a repeatable piece of track, and enough understanding of sag, rebound, compression, progression, tyres and cockpit to know which dial actually answers the complaint you have.
The Technique
- A setup you cannot reproduce is not a setup. Before touching anything, build a baseline and write it down: fork and shock pressure or spring rate, sag front and rear, rebound and compression clicks counted from fully closed, volume spacers, tyre pressure taken with the gauge you always use, bar roll, lever angle and reach, control positions, tyre and insert. Keep it by track and by date, with one honest line about what the bike did well and badly that day. Riders who feel their way through setup end up chasing themselves in circles, changing something, going slower, changing it back wrong and losing the plot by lunchtime. A logbook lets you step back one move when a change turns out to be wrong, which is most of its value.
- Sag sets where you start in the travel, not just how soft the bike feels. It is ride height and geometry first: how much travel remains to extend into a hole, where the bike sits when you load a corner, and the head and seat angles you actually ride rather than the ones on the spec sheet. Set it in full riding kit, standing in your riding position rather than seated, on flat ground, and take the reading after moving the bike gently so the seals settle. The convention is less sag at the front than at the rear. More rear sag buys grip and a slacker front but eats support; less gives support and a taller ride but can skate. Settle sag before you touch a damping dial, because every damping choice you make afterwards is made for that ride height.
- Most setup advice fails because it was not built for you. A number from a faster rider, a magazine or a manufacturer's chart is a starting point shaped around a different weight, a different style, a different track and a different tolerance for harshness. Worse, the human sense of fast is unreliable. A bike that feels lively, busy and harsh is often quicker on the clock than a bike that feels plush, and a bike that feels planted can be quietly costing you grip by never moving. So setup has to be run as a test, with one variable, a repeatable piece of track and something more honest than your own impressions to judge by. Almost nobody does this properly, and it is a real part of why two riders on identical bikes finish seconds apart.
