GEAR DECISIONS: SKIS, BOOTS, LAYERS AND THE POWDER KIT

After this lesson you can buy a snow kit that suits the riding you actually do, know which single purchase deserves the most money and the most time, and know what you can rent, borrow or skip entirely.
The Technique
- **Ski width and shape.** Waist width is the first fork in the road. A ski in the mid 80s to mid 90s underfoot is a hardpack and groomer tool: it goes edge to edge fast, holds on ice, and sinks in deep snow. Around 100 underfoot is the all mountain middle, competent everywhere and outstanding nowhere. Past about 110, with rocker in the tip and tail and some taper in the shape, you get a powder ski that floats without you fighting for it. Shape matters as much as width. Rocker lifts the contact points off the snow so the ski planes early and turns in soft conditions with almost no effort. That same rocker costs you edge hold on firm snow. Who suits what: if most of your days are resort laps on groomers, buy the narrower ski and rent something fat for the trip. If you have booked heli or cat days, ride a dedicated powder ski, because a resort ski in deep snow turns a dream week into a leg workout.
- **Skis or a snowboard for heli terrain.** Both work and guides run mixed groups every day. Skis give you more options in flat runouts, easier traverses, and the ability to sidestep out of a hole. That matters in heli terrain, where landings and pickups often sit at the bottom of long flat aprons. A snowboard gives you effortless float in deep snow and a much shorter learning curve for powder if you already ride, but you will unstrap and skate the flats while the skiers glide past, and long traverses are genuinely awkward. If you snowboard, ride a directional board with setback stance and take a collapsible pole for the runouts. If you are equal on both, take skis for heli and cat trips. Do not learn a new sliding tool on an expensive trip. Ride what you already own the movements for.
- **Boot fit, the purchase that outranks everything.** Skis are a preference. Boots are a fit problem, and a badly fitted boot ruins days that nothing else can save. Buy boots from a fitter who does a shell fit: liner out, foot in the empty shell, heel against the back, and a check of the gap behind your heel. A finger or two of gap is a performance fit. More than that and you are in a boot that is too big, which is the most common mistake in the sport. Boots feel snug in the shop and pack out with use, so the boot that feels comfortable on the shop floor is usually already too large. Buy on the width of the shell as much as the length. A wide foot in a narrow race last will never be fixed by punching alone. Budget for the fitting itself, not only the boot.
- **Flex, footbeds and liners.** Flex ratings are printed as numbers, but they are not standardised between makers, so treat them as a rough band rather than a spec. Soft flex forgives poor technique and cold legs and suits lighter or newer skiers. Stiff flex transmits every input to the ski and punishes sloppiness, and it suits heavier and stronger skiers who drive the front of the boot. Most people buy too stiff because stiff sounds better. The stock footbed is flat foam and does close to nothing. A moulded footbed supports the arch, stops your foot spreading inside the shell, and often solves the toe pain people try to cure by going up a size. It is the cheapest upgrade with the biggest return in the whole kit. Heat mouldable liners cost more and buy you a faster break in and a better wrap around odd shaped ankles, which matters most on trips where you cannot lose two days to break in pain.
- **Bindings and release.** Resort bindings are heavy, robust and release predictably. Touring bindings with pin toes are far lighter and let you walk uphill, at the cost of some downhill feel and a more finicky entry in deep snow. Hybrid bindings sit between the two: they walk acceptably and ski nearly like alpine bindings, and they are the honest choice for anyone doing a mix of lift days and short hikes. Release values are set from your height, weight, age and boot sole length by a technician, and they are the only part of your kit that exists to fail on purpose. Raising the setting to stop pre-release is how knees get hurt. If you pre-release repeatedly, the answer is a shop visit, not a screwdriver in the car park. Have the release tested when you buy, and again if your weight or boots change.
- **Helmet.** Buy a helmet certified for snow sports, not a bike or skate helmet. Fit beats every feature: the helmet should sit level, contact your head all the way around with no pressure points, and stay put when you shake your head with the strap undone. Rotational impact systems, which let the shell move slightly against the liner, address the twisting forces that cause a lot of brain injury, and they are worth the extra cost. In moulded construction the shell and liner are fused, giving a lighter and lower profile helmet at higher cost. Hard shell helmets are heavier and cheaper and take knocks in transit better. Adjustable vents matter more than people expect, because a helmet you overheat in is a helmet you take off. Replace after any real impact, even with no visible damage, and replace on age regardless. The liner is single use by design.
- **Goggles and lenses.** Frame size determines field of view, and the goggle must mate with your helmet with no gap across your forehead. Try them together before you buy. Lens shape is mostly preference: curved in both planes reduces distortion and glare at the edges, curved in one plane is cheaper and slightly narrower in view. The number that matters is light transmission, the share of light the lens lets through. A low number is a dark lens for bright, high altitude, bluebird days. A high number is a near clear lens for storm days, flat light and night riding. One mid lens is a compromise that is wrong at both ends of the week. Get into the habit of carrying a spare lens or a second goggle in your pack, because in snow country the light changes hour to hour, and a dark lens in a whiteout removes all the definition you need to read terrain. Never wipe the inside of a wet lens. The anti fog coating comes off on the cloth, and once it is gone, it is gone.
- **Layers, and your hands.** Three functions, in order from skin out: move sweat, hold warmth, block weather. Next to skin, merino wool holds warmth when damp, resists odour over a long trip, and costs more. Synthetic dries faster, wears longer, is cheaper, and starts to smell on day two. Both work. Cotton does not. The mid layer is where you actually control temperature, so choose a grid fleece for high output days or a light insulated layer for standing around in the cold, and carry both on a long trip. Outerwear splits into shell and insulated. A shell plus separate layers is more versatile, vents better, and suits anyone working hard or travelling across seasons. An insulated jacket is simpler and warmer standing still, and it suits resort riders in cold, dry places. For hands, gloves give you dexterity for buckles, zips and camera work, and mitts are warmer because your fingers share heat. Cold handed people should ride mitts with a thin liner glove underneath so they can do fiddly jobs without bare skin. Carry a spare pair, kept inside your jacket, not in the boot of the car.
- **The backcountry additions.** Off piste, in heli or cat terrain, or anywhere outside patrolled boundaries, three items are not optional and are not separable: a transceiver, a probe and a shovel. Buy a modern digital transceiver with three antennas and a clear directional display, wear it in its harness under an outer layer or in a zipped leg pocket, and never in a pack. A probe of at least 240cm, longer if you ride deep snow country. Aluminium probes are cheaper and stiffer, carbon is lighter and dearer. Shovel blades must be metal, always. Plastic blades snap in avalanche debris, which sets like concrete. An airbag pack is the fourth item, and it changes your odds in a moving slide by helping keep you near the surface. Canister systems are lighter and cheaper but need refilling and are a nuisance to fly with. Fan systems are heavier and cost more, but they recharge, allow practice deployments, and travel without paperwork. Most operators will supply an airbag pack. Ask before you buy one.
Common Mistakes
Buying boots a size too big because they felt comfortable in the shop. Fix: get a shell fit, accept a snug boot, and give the liner a few days to pack out.
- Spending the whole budget on skis and taking the cheapest boot in the shop. Fix: reverse it. Boots first, fitting included, then whatever is left goes on skis.
- Riding one mid tint lens all week. Fix: carry a bright light lens and a storm lens, and swap them at lunch without being asked.
- Owning avalanche gear you have never used under pressure. Fix: run a burial search with your own gear, timed, before the trip. Gear you cannot use fast is only ballast.
- Wearing a cotton t shirt under technical layers. Fix: any wool or synthetic base layer beats the most expensive shell over cotton.
- Cranking up binding release settings after a pre-release. Fix: see a technician. The setting exists to protect your knee, not your pride.
The Drill
Lay the entire kit out on the floor at home, in the order you put it on. Beside each item write the last day you actually used it and the temperature range it works in. Then run three scenarios out loud: a bluebird cold morning, a wet spring afternoon, and a whiteout storm day. Anything that cannot be made to work in at least two of the three is either a gap to fill or a thing to leave at home. Finish by putting on gloves and, with your goggles fogged and your hood up, doing a full transceiver search for a buried pack in the back yard, timed. Whatever you fumble with in the yard, you will fumble with worse on the mountain.
Protective gear only works fitted, worn and maintained. A helmet that has taken a solid impact is finished, even if it looks fine, because the liner crushes once by design. Bindings need their release checked by a technician when you buy them and after any change in weight, boot or boot sole. Transceiver batteries go in fresh at the start of a trip, and rechargeables do not belong in a transceiver because their voltage drops without warning. The genuinely non-negotiable items for this sport are a certified helmet, correctly set bindings, and, the moment you leave patrolled terrain, a transceiver, probe and metal bladed shovel carried by every person in the group, with the training to use them. Carrying the kit without the practice is not safety, it is decoration. None of this equipment makes a slope safe. It only improves your chances after a decision has already gone wrong.
