10 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
The point
After this lesson you can prepare a sled, your body and a plan for riding in darkness and deep cold, where small problems become serious ones fast.

The Technique
- Night riding compresses your margin. You see less terrain, read less snow, and rescue takes longer. Plan shorter loops, on terrain you already know, with more fuel and time in reserve than feels necessary.
- Light discipline: stock headlights ride with you, not ahead of you. Auxiliary lights help, but the real fix is speed matched to sight distance. If you cannot stop inside what you can see, you are gambling.
- Cold kills machines first: clutches, throttle cables and fuel systems misbehave in deep cold. Warm the sled properly, check throttle return after every long stop, and keep the fuel topped to limit condensation.
