STEEPS: BODY POSITION & SPEED CONTROL
9 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
The point
After this lesson you can descend a steep pitch with linked, controlled turns instead of traversing, panicking, and side-slipping the whole face.

The Technique
- On steeps, the body stays vertical to the valley while the legs manage the slope. The mountain drops away, and you must keep the shoulders facing down the fall line.
- Speed control comes from turn shape, not from the brakes. Finish each turn further across the hill and speed dies naturally.
- Skiers: a firm pole plant down the hill starts every turn. Reach for it. It commits your body over the edge and times the rhythm.
Still under the glass
- 3 more technique steps
- The 3 mistakes that undo it, with fixes
- The drill that builds the reflex
- The safety non-negotiables
