GEAR DECISIONS: KIT, CONVERSION AND STAYING WARM ON A SNOWBIKE

After this lesson you can decide between a purpose built snowbike and a conversion kit, choose a track and ski setup that matches your terrain, and solve the real problem of the sport, which is staying warm and clear-sighted in moto gear in snow country.
The Technique
- **Purpose built snowbike or a conversion kit.** A conversion kit replaces the rear wheel with a track and the front wheel with a ski, on a dirt bike you already own or buy used. It is the cheaper way in, especially if the donor bike is already sitting in your shed, and it gives you a bike back in summer if you are willing to swap seasons. The costs are real: the swap takes a day the first few times, the bike needs a cooling and gearing rethink for snow, and the machine is a compromise designed around a dirt chassis. A purpose built snowbike arrives sorted. The cooling, gearing, chassis geometry and bodywork are designed for snow from the start, it needs no seasonal conversion, and it usually rides better on the first day. It costs considerably more and it does exactly one thing. Who suits what: if you already ride dirt and want to extend your season, buy the kit. If you ride snow every weekend all winter and never ride dirt, buy the purpose built machine and stop maintaining two set ups.
- **Choosing a donor bike.** Not every dirt bike converts well. Kits are built around specific model families, so start by checking what the kit maker supports and work backwards from there rather than starting with the bike you like. Bigger capacity engines pull the track better in deep snow, and a bike that felt strong in the dirt can feel gutless with a track behind it. Cooling is the trap. Snow blocks radiators and there is no airflow at low speed in deep powder, so many conversions need a cooling change, whether that is a fan, different radiator work or a snow specific route for coolant. Gearing usually needs to come down. Modern fuel injected bikes handle cold starting and altitude far better than older carburetted machines, which will need jetting attention every time the weather or elevation changes. Suspension is retuned rather than replaced, because the loads through a track and ski are nothing like the loads through wheels.
- **Track and ski options.** Track length and lug height set what the machine does. A shorter track is lighter and quicker to change direction, and it works in tight trees. A longer track floats and climbs and is more work to throw around. Lug height follows snow depth: tall lugs bite in bottomless powder and wear fast and vibrate on anything firm. Low lugs last longer and let go earlier in deep snow. The ski at the front controls how the bike steers and how much it dives. A wider ski floats the nose and resists diving into soft snow, which is what most riders want in powder, at the cost of some precision on firm surfaces. A narrower ski carves and holds a sidehill better and will submarine in deep snow. Keel and carbide depth on the underside of the ski determine bite on hardpack and road crossings. Who suits what: powder and alpine riders take the longer track and the wider ski, tree and hardpack riders take the shorter track, lower lugs and a narrower ski with more carbide.
- **The warmth problem, and how to layer for it.** Here is the fundamental problem of the sport. You are dressed like a moto rider, on a machine that demands moto movement, in snow country temperatures. Moto gear is built for airflow and abrasion, not for cold and wet, and snow gear is built for warmth and weather, not for the range of movement and impact protection a bike needs. Then the sport itself works against you. You generate serious heat riding, digging and picking the bike up, and then you stop dead and cool fast, in clothing that is now damp. Solve it with layers, not with one warm garment. A wool or synthetic base layer that keeps working when damp, a mid layer you can pull off without removing everything else, and an outer layer with real vents you can open one handed while moving. Take an insulated jacket in the pack for stops, and put it on the moment you stop rather than once you are cold. Waterproof outer layers with taped seams and high breathability matter more here than in any other snow discipline, because you will be wet from the inside more often than from the outside. Whatever you wear, keep body armour under it, not over it, and size the outer layers to fit over the armour without crushing your insulation flat.
- **Helmet, goggles and the fogging fight.** Most snowbikers ride a moto helmet with goggles, because the sport is a moto sport and you want the chin bar, the light weight, the airflow and the peak. That choice hands you the fogging problem in return. A moto helmet is designed for constant airflow that you do not get at snowbike speeds in deep snow. Three fixes, and you generally want all three. A breath deflector or breath box redirects your breath down and away from the lens, and it is the single most effective piece. Dual pane goggle lenses trap air between two layers so the inner lens stays above the temperature where your breath condenses on it, which costs more and works. And ventilation discipline: crack the goggles off your face while moving to clear them, never wipe the inside of a wet lens, and carry a warm dry spare goggle in the pack for when the first pair loses. Heated goggle lenses with a battery are the reliable option for people who fog badly in any conditions, at the cost of charging and one more thing to break. A snow helmet with a sealed shield fogs less but gives up the moto airflow and feel, and most riders come back to the moto helmet.
- **Gloves and bar mitts.** Your hands do the most work and get the least protection. Thin moto gloves give you the lever feel a bike needs and no warmth at all. Thick snow mitts keep you warm and take away the clutch and brake control the sport actually requires. The way out of that trade-off is bar mitts. A mitt fixed to the handlebar wraps the control and the lever, blocks wind and snow, and lets you ride a much thinner and more precise glove than the temperature would otherwise allow. Add heated grips and most riders can wear a light glove all day. The cost is a slightly cluttered cockpit and a moment of adjustment when reaching in and out. Whatever you land on, carry a dry spare pair inside your jacket and change into them the moment the first pair goes wet from digging. Wet hands on a bike is not just discomfort, it is a loss of the fine control the machine depends on.
- **Boots, warmth against control.** Moto boots give you the ankle support, shin protection and stiff sole the bike requires, and they are cold, because they are built for airflow and impact rather than insulation. Sled specific boots are far warmer and waterproof and give you nothing like the protection or the precise feel on the pegs and shifter that a bike needs. Both camps exist. The honest position is that a snowbike is a motorcycle and deserves motorcycle boots, and you make up the warmth with better socks, a thermal boot liner, or a heated insole and a boot cover. Riders on gentler terrain who prioritise a warm foot over a protected one will get away with a sled boot, and should know they are trading crash protection for comfort. Sizing matters either way: a boot crammed with thick socks cuts circulation and gets colder, not warmer. Buy for a snug fit over the sock you will actually ride in, with a little room to wiggle your toes, and keep a dry spare pair of socks in the pack.
- **Avalanche gear, worn on the body.** Snowbikes go where sleds go, which means avalanche terrain, and the same rule applies with even more force: the transceiver, probe and shovel ride on you, not on the machine. A bike separates from its rider more readily than a sled does, and a bike buried in debris with the shovel strapped to it is worth nothing to anyone. Wear the transceiver in a harness under an outer layer or in a zipped leg pocket, switched on at the trailhead. Probe and shovel go in a pack on your back, with a metal shovel blade, never plastic. Airbag packs work on a bike, and a sport specific harness with a leg strap matters more here than anywhere, because the pack has to stay put through the movement a bike demands. Choose a low profile pack, since a tall one will catch on your helmet every time you look up. Ride one at a time on anything that can slide, and watch each other from safe ground.
- **Recovery, because a bike gets stuck differently.** A stuck sled sits on its belly and needs floating out. A stuck snowbike falls over, and the recovery problem is different. It buries a spinning track in a trench, it lies on its side with snow packed into the airbox and controls, and it usually needs lifting rather than pulling. Carry a tow strap with loops at both ends and no metal hooks, because a snapped strap with a hook on it becomes a projectile. Carry a compact shovel that you already have for avalanche use, and use it to dig a ramp behind the track rather than trying to power out of a hole. Add zip ties and wire for the lever or plastic you snap, a small folding saw for the tree you get pinned against, spare levers, a plug spanner and a way to make fire. Learn the technique for standing the bike up alone: clear the snow from the low side, roll it upright across the fall line rather than up the hill, and get the track back on undisturbed snow before you touch the throttle. Most snowbike recoveries are digging and lifting, so pack for those, not for a winch.
Common Mistakes
Converting a bike without solving cooling. Fix: fit the cooling solution the kit maker specifies before the first ride, and check the radiator for packed snow every time you stop.
- One warm jacket instead of layers. Fix: base, mid and vented shell, plus an insulated jacket in the pack that goes on the moment you stop.
- Wiping the inside of a fogged lens with a glove. Fix: carry a warm dry spare goggle, run a breath deflector, and let the wet one go for the day.
- Thick mitts on the bars. Fix: bar mitts and a thin glove, so warmth and lever control stop competing.
- Avalanche kit strapped to the machine. Fix: transceiver on your body, probe and shovel in the pack you wear.
- Cramming thick socks into a tight boot. Fix: fit the boot around the sock you will ride in, and add warmth with a liner or heated insole rather than more sock.
The Drill
Do a full changeover audit. If you run a conversion, time yourself doing the swap from wheels to track and ski, alone, and write down every tool you had to walk back for. If you ride purpose built, do the same audit on the pre-ride check instead. Then do the cold stop test in the field: ride hard for twenty minutes so you are warm and damp, then stop and stand still in your kit for ten minutes without adding a layer. Whatever goes cold first is the weak point in your system, and it is almost always hands, feet or your back where the pack has flattened your insulation. Fix that one thing before the next ride, then repeat the test.
Protective gear only works fitted, worn and maintained. Snowbiking is a motorcycle sport, so keep motorcycle protection under the warm layers: a certified moto helmet, chest and back armour, knee protection and a neck brace if you ride one on dirt. Retire a helmet after any real impact and on age regardless, since the liner crushes once by design. Fresh alkaline batteries in the transceiver at the start of every trip, never rechargeables. The genuinely non-negotiable items here are the moto helmet, goggles that let you see the terrain rather than a grey blur, and, on any avalanche terrain, a transceiver, probe and metal bladed shovel carried on the body by every rider, with practice behind them. Add the discipline of riding one at a time on slopes that can slide. Fogged goggles are a safety item, not a comfort item, because you cannot read snow you cannot see, and most snowbike injuries start with a rider committing to terrain they had not actually looked at.
