The Technique

  1. A big climb is decided before you leave the bottom, and the decision that matters most is not the line, it is the exit. Every climb you commit to should have a planned turnout: a specific piece of the face, identified from the bottom, where you know you can bring the sled around if the climb is not going to happen. Riders who get hurt on climbs generally did not choose a bad line, they chose a line with no bail-out and then had to invent one at low speed on steep ground. Stand at the bottom and identify three things: the line, the place you turn out to rider's left, and the place you turn out to rider's right. If you cannot find at least one turnout, you are not looking at a climb, you are looking at a commitment, and you should treat it accordingly.
  2. Line choice up a face is a read of snow, not a read of geometry. The straightest line is rarely the fastest and almost never the safest. Look for continuity of snow texture. Uniform surface, consistent shading, no wind texture, no debris, no rollovers where the snow depth is going to change abruptly. Convexities are where snow depth changes and where slabs break, so a line that runs up a subtle rib or spine gives you both better support underfoot and better consequence management than a line up the middle of a bowl. Shade matters: sun-affected snow on a solar aspect will be heavier and grabbier by afternoon and will trench you where the morning line ran clean. Old tracks are information but not a guarantee; a trench from two days ago is now a firm rut that will steer your skis whether you want it to or not.
