GEAR DECISIONS: SLED, SUIT AND THE KIT THAT RIDES ON YOU

After this lesson you can choose a sled that matches the terrain you ride, buy outerwear that survives a day of digging, and know exactly which items must live on your body rather than in a bag on the machine.
The Technique
- **Mountain sled or trail sled, and track length.** These are two different machines wearing the same name. A trail sled has a short track with low lugs, a wide ski stance and plush suspension. It is comfortable on packed trails and helpless the moment the snow goes deep. A mountain sled has a long track with tall lugs, a narrow ski stance for edging on sidehills, a lighter chassis, and a running board layout designed for standing and throwing the machine around. Track length is the main lever. Shorter is more nimble in trees and easier to muscle out of a hole. Longer floats better in bottomless snow and climbs better, and it fights you in tight timber. The tall lugs that make deep snow work will chew themselves up on hardpack and road crossings. Who suits what: if you are riding alpine bowls and steep timber, take the mountain sled and accept it is a handful on trails. If most of your riding is groomed trail with an occasional side hit, a mountain sled is the wrong tool and an expensive one. Rent before you buy, on the terrain you actually ride.
- **Engine, and what altitude does to it.** A naturally aspirated engine loses power as you climb, because there is less air to burn. High in the alpine, a machine that felt strong at the trailhead feels lazy on the last pitch. A turbo puts that air back and transforms high altitude climbing, which is why so many mountain sleds run one. It also adds weight over the front, more heat, more maintenance, higher fuel and oil demands, and a much higher purchase cost. Two stroke engines are lighter and more responsive, and they suit riders who throw the machine about. Four strokes are heavier, smoother and generally happier under sustained turbo boost. Who suits what: if you ride near sea level, or you are still learning to control a sled, skip the turbo. The power will hide your technique rather than build it. If you ride high alpine terrain, carry a heavier load, or are a bigger rider, the turbo is the difference between reaching the top and digging near it. Whatever you ride, use the fuel and oil grade the maker specifies. A turbo is unforgiving about that.
- **Helmet, and the fogging problem.** Fogging is the defining equipment problem in sledding, because you generate serious heat and then stop dead in cold, humid air. Three approaches. A moto style helmet with goggles and a breath deflector is light, well ventilated, cheap to replace, and gives you the best airflow when you are working hard, at the cost of a cold face on the ride home and reliance on your goggles staying clear. A snow specific helmet with a dual pane shield seals the face and stops most fogging passively, and it suits colder, drier riding. A heated shield, powered from the sled or a battery, is the most reliable answer to fog and the most expensive, and it ties you to a lead or a charge. Modular helmets flip open so you can vent, drink and talk, and they carry more weight and more hinges to fill with snow. Whatever you choose, get a proper breath deflector or box, because most fog is your own breath finding its way up into the lens. Always carry a spare goggle in the pack, kept warm and dry. A wet goggle will not recover in the field.
- **Monosuit or jacket and bib, and what the ratings mean.** A monosuit is a single piece. Nothing gets in when you go over the bars into deep snow, it is warmer, and it is one less join to leak. It is harder to vent, harder to adjust across a warm afternoon, and awkward when nature calls. Jacket and bib is the flexible option: you can strip the jacket for the walk up, layer under it, and replace either half when one wears out. Both come insulated or as uninsulated shells. Uninsulated shells suit riders who work hard and dig a lot, because you control warmth with layers underneath instead of being stuck with a fixed amount. Now the numbers. Outerwear is rated as a pair. The first figure is how much water pressure the fabric resists before it leaks, measured as a column of water in millimetres. The second is how much moisture vapour it lets out, measured in grams through a square metre in a day. Sledding punishes low breathability more than almost any snow sport, because you sweat hard, then stand in the cold in wet clothing. Buy the highest breathability you can afford, and look for fully taped seams, sealed zips and snug cuffs. A high waterproof number with poor breathability just moves the water to the inside.
- **Boots.** Sled specific boots are tall, warm, waterproof, and have a stiff sole so your foot works the running board without collapsing. They are the right answer for pure sledding, and they are heavy and clumsy to walk or climb in. Snowboard boots are warm and comfortable and are not waterproof enough for a day of deep snow and digging. Hiking boots are the wrong tool entirely: they wet out, they have no protection against the tunnel and the track, and the sole flexes on the boards. The trade-off appears for riders using the sled to reach ski terrain. There you have two honest choices. Carry both, and change at the drop point, which costs you space and time but gives you the right boot for each job. Or ride a ski touring boot with a walkable sole and accept a colder, less protected foot on the machine. Anyone doing this often should ride the touring boot with a proper insulated liner and heated grips to compensate, and should keep spare dry socks in the pack.
- **Gloves, mitts, and the spare pair rule.** You will dig. Digging soaks gloves faster than anything else in snow sport, and wet gloves in cold air end your day. Gloves give the finger control you need for throttle and brake and for clearing snow from vents and tracks. Mitts are warmer and cost you dexterity, and they suit very cold riding and anyone with poor circulation. Gauntlet cuffs seal over the sleeve and keep deep snow out. Leather palms last and can be waxed. Whichever you buy, the spare pair rule is absolute: carry a second pair, keep them dry inside your jacket where body heat protects them, and change into them the moment the first pair goes wet, not when your hands go numb. Heated grips and a thumb warmer reduce how much glove you need, which lets you ride a thinner, more precise glove all day.
- **The kit that rides on you, not on the sled.** Your transceiver, probe and shovel belong on your body and in the pack you are wearing. Not in the tunnel bag. The reason is simple: in a slide, the sled and rider separate almost every time. The machine gets buried somewhere else, ends up on top of debris, or is left behind up the hill. A shovel strapped to a buried sled saves nobody. Wear the transceiver in its harness under an outer layer, or in a zipped leg pocket that fully closes, switched on at the trailhead and left on. Probe and shovel go in the pack on your back, with a metal shovel blade, because plastic snaps in set debris. The tunnel bag is for spares, tools, fuel and lunch. It is not avalanche kit storage, and treating it that way is one of the most common and most costly errors in the sport.
- **The pack, and what goes in it.** A standard pack is lighter, cheaper and simpler, and it carries everything you need for a day. An airbag pack improves your chances of staying near the surface in a moving slide, and it is the single most useful thing you can add on avalanche terrain. Canister systems are lighter and cheaper, need a refill after each use, and are a nuisance to fly with. Fan systems cost more and weigh more, but they recharge, let you practise deployments in the yard, and travel without paperwork. For sledding, look for a pack designed for the sport: a stable harness with a leg strap that stays put when the machine bucks, and a deployment handle you can reach with a mitt on. Inside it, every ride: probe, shovel, spare goggles, spare gloves, a spare drive belt and the tools to change it, plugs and the plug spanner, a small first aid kit, water, food you can eat one handed, a head torch, and a radio if the group runs them. Test that you can open the pack, in gloves, without taking it off.
- **Tow strap and recovery kit.** A stuck sled is not an emergency until dark, and then it becomes one very quickly. Carry a tow strap rated well beyond the weight of the machine, with no metal hooks on the ends, because a snapped strap with a hook attached is a projectile. Loops at both ends and a soft shackle if you need a join. Add a length of rope for hauling from a distance, a small folding saw for the tree that is pinning you, spare pull rope or a starter cord, zip ties and wire for holding broken parts together, and a way of making fire. Recovery on a sled is mostly technique rather than gear, so practise the basics before you need them: how to roll a machine upright alone, how to stamp a platform under a buried track, and how to set a strap so two riders pull in the same direction without one of them standing in the line of it. Nobody stands in line with a loaded strap, ever.
Common Mistakes
Avalanche gear stored in the tunnel bag. Fix: transceiver on your body, probe and shovel in the pack you wear. Every ride, no exceptions.
- Buying a turbo before you can ride. Fix: spend the money on more days and better outerwear, and add power once your technique needs it.
- One pair of gloves for the whole day. Fix: carry a spare pair inside your jacket and swap the moment the first pair wets out.
- Choosing outerwear on the waterproof number alone. Fix: read the breathability figure. Sledding drowns you from the inside first.
- Riding hiking boots or snowboard boots to save money. Fix: tall waterproof boots with a stiff sole, or the touring boot compromise if you are skiing off the machine.
- Fogged goggles pushed onto the helmet so you can see. Fix: a breath deflector, better venting, and a warm dry spare goggle in the pack.
The Drill
Kit audit at the trailhead, on a normal day, in full gear. Set a timer. Without taking your gloves off, get your transceiver out of search mode and back, get your probe assembled, get your shovel out of the pack and put together, and deploy nothing but touch the airbag handle so you know exactly where it is. Anything that takes fumbling gets fixed that night: a zip pull added, a pocket changed, a strap re-routed. Then repeat the whole thing with the group watching each other, because in a real search you will be doing it while somebody is under the snow and the clock is the only thing that matters.
Protective gear only works fitted, worn and maintained. Helmets are single impact items, so retire one that has taken a real hit even if it looks fine, and retire it on age regardless. Check the airbag system before every trip, including the canister pressure or the battery charge, and pull the handle at least once a season so your hands know the movement. Fresh alkaline batteries in the transceiver at the start of every trip, never rechargeables, because their voltage drops without warning. The genuinely non-negotiable items for mountain sledding are a certified helmet, and a transceiver, probe and metal shovel carried on the body by every rider in the group, with real practice behind them. Add to that a group that rides one at a time on any slope that can slide, and watches from a safe spot. No amount of equipment substitutes for that habit, and no airbag makes a slope safe to ride.
