HIPS & VISION: MTB AND STAND-UP JET SKI AS SLED PREP
8 min · Full library · written lesson, video in production
After this lesson your mountain bike and stand-up ski sessions train the two sled skills the motorised crossovers miss: terrain vision at self-generated speed, and balance against a surface that moves under you.
The Technique
- MTB's unique gift is vision. With no engine noise and no throttle to lean on, you read terrain or you suffer. Ride blue and black descents scanning two moves ahead - that eyes-up habit is exactly the line-reading a treed sled slope demands.
- MTB drills: cornering with the bike leaned and body upright (separation - the same shape as counter-leaning a sled), track stands at lights (slow balance again), and pump-track sessions for generating speed with your body, which teaches you what your hips actually do.
- The fitness dividend is free: repeat MTB descents with climbs between them mirror the leg-endurance profile of a powder day better than any gym machine, and the conditioning discipline counts it as your aerobic sessions.
- Stand-up jet ski is the balance lab. The surface under you is never still - every second on the tray is hips, ankles and core making micro-corrections against thrust. That is the closest dry-land-available feeling to a sled going light in bottomless snow.
The second half of the technique, the common mistakes, the drill and the safety non-negotiables open when you book a trip that runs snowmobile. Your booking unlocks this whole library.
