MACHINE RECOVERY AND THE DECISION NOT TO GO

After this lesson you know how to handle the aftermath of a machine going into a crevasse without adding a casualty, what recovering a sled genuinely involves and costs, and how to make the honest decision about whether to enter glaciated terrain at all or to book someone who should.
The Technique
- People come before machines, every time, without discussion. A sled in a crevasse is an inert object, and it will still be there tomorrow, next week, or forever. A person in a crevasse is on a clock. Nobody begins any part of a machine recovery while anyone is cold, injured, wet, unaccounted for, or still in the hole. This sounds obvious sitting at home, and it is not obvious in the moment, because a machine is expensive, it is your way out, and looking at it is easier than looking at the situation. Say this out loud to your group before the trip so that the decision is already made when the pressure arrives.
- The most dangerous part of the day is often after the casualty is out. The party is now wet, cold, running on adrenaline, missing gear that went down the hole or got scattered, short one machine, and further from the vehicles than when it started. This is where the second incident happens. Stop properly. Get everyone warm and fed. Reassess the ground, because the surface has just proven itself. Work out how the party gets off the glaciated terrain with one fewer machine and possibly an injured rider, and whether anyone needs medical care that outranks everything else. In almost every case the correct decision is to leave, by the shortest assessed route, immediately, and to write the day off.
- Recovering a sled from a crevasse is a technical rope operation, not a recovery job. The machine may be nose down, wedged between converging walls, hanging on its track, resting on a lower bridge, or sitting under a metre of collapsed snow. It weighs several times what a person does and it is an awkward, snagging, sharp shape. Any lift needs anchors well beyond what a personal haul requires, real mechanical advantage, a way of managing the edge under enormous load, and usually widening the hole from above, which means someone cutting ice and snow over the top of whoever is below. And someone has to go in to rig it, protected, with all the exposure that implies. This is not a job to improvise with a tow strap and hope.
- Because of that, machine recovery frequently needs professional help, and sometimes it is not possible at all. A guiding operation, a specialist recovery crew or a helicopter with longline capability may be the only realistic option, and all of them cost money, need weather, and take time to arrange. In some terrain and some seasons, the honest answer is that the machine stays. Plan for that possibility before you go, rather than discovering your position on it while standing on a glacier.
- An abandoned machine is not a neutral outcome. It contains fuel, oil, coolant, a battery, and a large amount of plastic and metal, all of which sit inside moving ice and eventually work their way down and out at the terminus, often into meltwater feeding a catchment somebody depends on. Beyond the environmental reality there is a legal one: many national parks, conservation areas and land management regimes require you to remove what you brought in, and abandoning a vehicle can be an offence with penalties attached, quite separate from any recovery bill. If you ride glaciated terrain in a protected area, know the rules on this before you go, not after.
- Sort out insurance and rescue costs before you leave home, and be specific. Search and rescue arrangements differ enormously between countries and even between regions: in some places rescue is a public service, in others you are billed, and helicopter time, medical evacuation and repatriation are expensive everywhere. Many travel policies exclude motorised sports outright, and many that cover snowmobiling exclude off trail riding, glaciated terrain, or unguided activity, which is exactly the combination this module is about. Read the exclusions rather than the headline. Confirm in writing that your policy names snowmobiling as you will actually be doing it, and check whether it covers search and rescue, helicopter evacuation, medical repatriation, and any liability for machine recovery. Carry a satellite communicator or beacon, know the local emergency procedure, and make sure someone outside the party knows your plan and your expected return.
- Now the central judgement of this module. Before you enter glaciated terrain, work through it honestly. Do you have current local knowledge of that specific glacier, from someone who has been on it recently. Is there a qualified guide with you, or a good reason there is not. Is the snowpack well established and cold, rather than early season thin or late season rotten. Has it been cold enough for long enough, and are you travelling in the strong part of the day. Is the visibility good enough to read the surface. Does every person in the party have the gear and the in person training to be a functioning part of a rescue, and could the party still perform one if the strongest member is the casualty. Is there a non-glaciated alternative that gives you most of the riding for a fraction of the risk. If you are hesitating on any of these, the default answer is no, and choosing not to go is not a failure of nerve, it is the skill.
- Some situations are guided or nothing, and it is worth naming them plainly. An unfamiliar glacier. No recent local information. Early or late season, or any period after significant warmth or rain. Marginal weather, flat light, or a forecast that could trap you on the ice past the refreeze. A party without formal crevasse rescue training, or with anyone who could not take part in a haul. Remote, helicopter access ground where outside help is hours or days away. And the clearest signal of all: any plan whose safety argument depends on being able to perform the rescue rather than on not needing it. For most riders, most of the time, on real glaciated terrain, a qualified mountain guide is not a luxury option, it is the only version of the trip that makes sense.
- If you are booking a trip that crosses glaciers, ask the operator direct questions and listen to how they answer, not just what they say. How much of the route is on glaciated terrain, and can you see it on a map. What qualifications do the guides hold, and how well do they know that specific glacier. What is the guest to guide ratio on the ice. What rescue equipment travels with the group, on which machine, and when did the team last practise with it. What are the no-go and turnaround criteria, and who has authority to call it. What happens if a guest declines a section. What are the communication and evacuation plans, and what is the realistic time to outside help. What happens if a machine goes in, who recovers it and who pays. What insurance do they carry and what do they require from you. A good operator will answer all of this readily and will have thought about it more than you have. An operator who is vague, who treats the questions as an insult, or who tells you the glacier is not really a problem, has told you everything you needed to know.
Common Mistakes
Starting on the machine while a person is still cold, injured or being sorted out. Fix: agree the people first rule out loud before the trip so it is already decided when the machine is sitting there costing money.
- Continuing the day after a crevasse incident because everyone is now fine. Fix: treat the incident as the end of the trip, warm up, reassess, and leave by the shortest assessed route.
- Improvising a machine recovery with straps and enthusiasm. Fix: recognise it as a heavy technical rope operation with someone working below a cut edge, and get professional help or leave the machine.
- Assuming your travel insurance covers this. Fix: read the exclusions specifically for motorised sport, off trail use, glaciated terrain and unguided activity, and get confirmation in writing before you go.
- Booking a glacier trip on the strength of photography and price. Fix: ask the operator the hard questions about qualifications, ratios, rescue gear, turnaround authority and evacuation, and judge them on how comfortably they answer.
The Drill
Before your next trip that touches glaciated ground, write two single page documents and share them with the whole party. The first is your go and no-go sheet: the specific conditions, timings, visibility, training levels and local information you require, written as decisions made in advance rather than judgements to be made on the day, including the turnaround time and who has the authority to call it. The second is your cost and consequence sheet: what a rescue would cost where you are going, what your policy actually covers, what an abandoned machine would cost you in money and in legal exposure, and who you would call. The standard is that every person in the party has read both and can state the turnaround criteria from memory. Then run the operator questions from step nine on the trip you are actually considering, write down the answers, and see how they read on paper.
The most valuable skill in this entire module is the willingness to not go. Glaciated terrain does not reward commitment, and the mountain is unmoved by how far you have travelled or what the trip cost. Everything written across these five lessons is background understanding for a decision, never a qualification to make it. Get formal crevasse rescue training in person from a qualified mountain guide, refresh it, and for glaciated riding, go guided by people who know that ice, in the season they know it in.
