AVALANCHE AIRBAGS: CANISTER, FAN AND THE SECOND DEPLOYMENT

After this lesson you can choose between a canister and a fan airbag pack knowing what each costs you, and you understand the scenario almost nobody plans for: needing a second deployment on the same day.
The Technique
- Start with what an airbag actually does, because it is narrower than people think. Inflating a large volume beside your body makes you a bigger object in a moving mass of debris, and bigger objects tend to rise. That is the whole mechanism. It does nothing about trauma against trees and rocks, nothing about a terrain trap that buries you deep regardless of size, and nothing about a slide that runs you into a gully and piles on top. The weight of evidence among avalanche professionals supports airbags improving outcomes in the slides where burial depth is what kills you. It is a last resort that partly works, not a permission slip, and treating it as one is how people end up in terrain they had no business entering.
- Canister systems inflate from a cylinder of compressed gas. They deploy fast, they work cold, there is no battery to think about, and mechanically there is very little to fail. The pack is generally lighter than a fan pack. If you pull the handle, the bag is up almost immediately.
- Here is the thing about canister systems that decides the argument for a lot of riders, and it is the scenario nobody rehearses. You get caught. You pull the handle. It works, you stay up, you walk away, and now you are standing in avalanche terrain that just proved it is loaded, with a long way still to travel. You can repack the bag, but the cylinder is spent. There is no second shot. Everything between you and the vehicle is now ridden with a pack that looks like protection and is not. That is the real world problem with a single use cartridge, and it is a much more common situation than the one people imagine when they buy the pack.
- Fan systems solve exactly that. A battery drives a fan that inflates the bag using ambient air, so once it is repacked and the battery still has charge, you are live again. Multiple deployments on one day, on one charge. In a navigate-out scenario that is the difference between carrying protection and carrying a memory of protection. The trade off is that inflation is slightly slower than a gas system, and slightly slower is not nothing when a slide has already taken your feet.
- The other fan trade off is that it is a battery, and batteries are a discipline. It needs charging before the trip and topping up during it, it holds charge poorly in deep cold if you let it, and it needs testing rather than assuming. The packs are also generally heavier and bulkier. If you are the sort of person who arrives at the trailhead with a flat phone, be honest with yourself about that before you buy one.
- Now the part that decides it for a lot of Australians: getting the thing to the mountain. Fan systems travel on aircraft with far less drama, because the constraint is a lithium battery and airlines have well understood rules for those. Canister systems are genuinely difficult. Compressed gas cylinders are dangerous goods, rules differ by airline and by country, and the older designs that fired the pin with a pyrotechnic charge in the trigger handle are an absolute nightmare at check in. Assume that flying with a charged cylinder will go badly and plan around it rather than arguing at the counter.
- The workaround for canister owners is to sort out gas at the destination, and it works differently in every country, so check before you book rather than after you land. **Japan** is the hardest: Backcountry Access publish plainly that United States and European cylinders cannot be refilled there and that you must rent a Japanese cylinder on arrival, which is why their Japan listings are rental centres rather than refill centres. Mammut even sell a Japan specific cartridge. **Canada** is friendlier than most people expect, with Air Canada accepting one avalanche rescue backpack in checked baggage with the cylinder installed, though any itinerary that touches the United States needs it empty, and no refill point is published anywhere in Whistler, Pemberton or Squamish. **New Zealand** allows one pack with prior airline approval, and there is no refill or exchange centre in the country at all, so the only fix on the ground is buying a full cylinder over the counter. A fan pack sidesteps every line of this paragraph.
- Now the finding that decides it for most travelling riders, and it surprised us: **you very probably cannot hire an airbag pack at your destination.** Across Whistler, Pemberton, Squamish, Queenstown and Wanaka, not one shop hires airbag packs over the counter. Transceiver, probe and shovel sets are everywhere and easy. Airbags are supplied only by heli operators, issued with the day, and not available standalone. Hokkaido has a handful of shops that do hire them and that is the exception rather than the rule. So if you want an airbag on your trip, own one and bring it, or book onto a heli day that issues one. Do not turn up expecting to rent one, and do not trust a shop's old rentals page that still ranks in search, because at least one well known Whistler shop that appears at the top of those results went out of business in 2024.
- Pack or vest is the last choice. A vest carries the system on your torso and is lighter and less bulky, and the argument for it is simple: the airbag that works is the one you are actually wearing, and people take packs off. A pack carries more, which matters when your shovel, probe, spare layers, food and repair kit have to go somewhere. Whichever you choose, the leg strap or crotch strap is not optional. Without it the pack can be pulled off you in a slide, and then it is a bright orange balloon floating on top of the debris while you are underneath it.
- Owning one properly means practising with it. Deploy it at least once so your hand knows where the handle is and how hard it pulls. Practise finding that handle with big gloves on, because that is the only condition in which you will ever use it. Repack it yourself so you can do it in the field. Service it on the maker's schedule, check the battery or cylinder before every trip, and stow the handle out where it can be reached rather than tucked away tidy.
Common Mistakes
Buying an airbag and riding bigger terrain because of it. Fix: the pack does not change the snowpack. If the plan only works because you are wearing one, the plan is wrong.
- Wearing the pack with the leg strap dangling. Fix: strap it every single time, or accept that the pack may leave without you.
- Turning up in Japan with a full cylinder or expecting a refill. Fix: hire a Japanese cylinder, arrange it before you fly, or take a fan pack.
The Drill
The glove test and the repack. With winter gloves on, find and pull the deployment handle from a normal riding position, eyes closed. Then repack the bag yourself, without the manual, and check the cylinder or battery state. Do it once a season and before every trip, and time the repack so you know whether it is a two minute job or a twenty minute job in your hands.
An airbag is the last item in a chain that starts with terrain choice and ends with your partners digging. It does not replace a transceiver, probe and shovel, it does not replace training, and it does not make a bad decision survivable.
