CREW WATCH: WHAT IT IS, AND WHAT IT WILL NEVER DO

After this lesson you know exactly what our free crew app does, who it is for, and the one thing it will never do for you, which is make you findable. It is a backup for a failed transceiver and a way of noticing sooner. It is not a transceiver and it is not a reason to leave one behind.
The Technique
- **Start with the sentence the app opens with, because everything else follows from it.** Helps you find others. Will never help anyone find you. Carry a transceiver and know how to use it. That is printed on the first screen, it is in the acknowledgment you cannot skip, and it is the reason the app exists in the shape it does rather than in the shape that would sell better.
- **Understand what problem it actually solves, because it is not the one people assume.** In a tree well or a deep snow immersion, the thing that kills is not usually that nobody could find the person. It is that **nobody noticed they were gone.** A rider drops behind, the group rides on, and twenty minutes pass before anyone counts heads. That gap is what this app attacks, and it is the strongest argument for it by a long way.
- **Here is how the watching works.** At the trailhead the party pairs phones. From then on **each phone watches its own motion, not anybody else's.** If your phone decides you have stopped moving during a descent, it asks you privately whether you are alright. If you do not answer, it gets loud. If you still do not answer, it tells the crew where you last were. Four rungs, each one buying the one after it.
- **The private rung is the important one and it is deliberately private.** When your phone first asks if you are OK, **nobody else knows it asked.** Cancel it and the crew never hears about it. That is not a nicety, it is what makes the app survivable in a real group: an app that pages six people every time somebody stops for a snack gets deleted by lunchtime on day one, and then it is not running on the day it matters.
- **Now the honest part about the search side, and it is a shorter promise than you might expect.** The app can scan for the Bluetooth of a phone, watch or earbuds. That is genuinely useful in one specific situation: **a rider whose transceiver has failed, been switched off, or been ripped away.** It is a redundancy. It is not a second transceiver, and it is much worse than the first one.
- **Why it is worse comes down to physics, and it is worth understanding rather than taking on trust.** Transceivers work at 457 kHz, a low frequency that passes through snow with very little loss, which is exactly why they can be found at range and at depth. **Phones work at 2.4 GHz, which is absorbed hard by liquid water**, and wet snow is full of it. So the depth at which a phone stops being detectable is far shallower than the depth at which a transceiver stops, and we will not publish a number for it until we have measured it in Australian spring snow, which is the worst case and therefore the honest one.
- **There is a second limit that is even more important, and the app says it out loud on the search screen.** A locked phone sitting in a pocket is not a beacon. Some handsets emit very little, some emit almost nothing, and it varies by model, by operating system and by battery state. So **absence of signal is not absence of a person.** If the app hears nothing, that tells you nothing. Probe lines and organised rescue, exactly as before.
- **Which is why the app is honest about who it works best for, and it is an uncomfortable answer.** It finds crew phones running the app far more reliably than it finds a stranger's. **The people it works best on are the people most likely to already have a transceiver.** We are telling you that rather than hiding it, because a safety tool you have the wrong idea about is worse than no tool at all.
- **The rules the app enforces on itself, and why.** Before it will arm, it makes you put the phone in airplane mode with Bluetooth left on. That is not battery saving. **A phone out of coverage transmits at maximum power hunting for a tower, and that is the interference most likely to degrade a transceiver search.** It also coaches you to keep the phone at least twenty centimetres from your transceiver harness, and if you go to run a phone search it stops you until you confirm the transceiver search is either done or not needed.
- **And the cost of that rule, stated plainly because the app created it.** On most handsets airplane mode also blocks emergency calls. So the distress screen carries a large button to turn airplane mode off and call. **We are not going to put your phone in a state that blocks triple zero and then say nothing about it.**
- **Practice mode exists for one reason that matters more than drilling.** Hide a crew phone and search for it. What you learn is not really how to search, it is **what your own handset actually emits**, which is different for every phone in your group. A crew that has run practice knows which of their phones are findable at all. That is information you cannot get any other way and you want it before you need it, not after.
- **So here is where it fits in a real day, and the order never changes.** Transceiver, probe, shovel, and the training to use them. Then the trailhead check. Then, if you want it, this app running in the background noticing things faster than a distracted group does. **If the app ever finds itself first in that order, something has gone badly wrong with how you are riding.**
Common Mistakes
Treating the app as a transceiver substitute. Fix: it cannot make you findable. Nothing in it works on you. Carry the transceiver.
- Reading silence from the search as an all clear. Fix: absence of signal is not absence of a person. Handset emission varies enormously and snow absorbs 2.4 GHz hard.
- Running a phone search before a transceiver search. Fix: the transceiver finds people, the phone finds phones. The app blocks this, and the block is there for a reason.
- Keeping the phone in the same pocket as the transceiver. Fix: at least twenty centimetres away. The app cannot enforce this one, so it is on you.
- Forgetting that airplane mode blocks emergency calls. Fix: the distress screen has a button to turn it off. Know it is there before you need it.
- Never running practice mode. Fix: it is the only way to learn what your own phone emits, and every handset in the group is different.
The Drill
The trailhead pair and the practice search, done together at the start of a trip. Pair every phone in the party, check the roster shows everyone with a healthy battery, then hide one phone in a pack fifty metres away and search for it. Then bury it and repeat. Write down which handsets were findable and at what depth, and treat any phone that could not be found as a phone nobody should be relying on.
This app is a search aid and a way of noticing sooner. It is not a rescue device, it is not protection, and it does not reduce the training or the equipment you need to carry.
