SLOPE CUTTING: SKI CUTS AND SLED CUTS

After this lesson you understand what a ski cut and a sled cut are, why they are professional level techniques with narrow application, and why for almost every recreational day the correct answer is to be somewhere else instead.
The Technique
- A ski cut is a deliberate, fast traverse across the top of a small start zone, made from a safe entry point and aimed at a known safe exit point, with the intention of loading the slope and seeing whether it releases below the person doing it. It is used by patrollers and guides to manage specific, small, well understood features. It is not a way of testing a slope you are unsure about. It is a control action taken on a feature whose behaviour, size and runout are already understood, where the person doing it has decided in advance that a release is an acceptable and survivable outcome. If you cannot say those things about the slope in front of you, the technique does not apply.
- The preconditions are strict and every one of them is a hard requirement, not a preference. The feature must be small enough that a release cannot bury you. The consequence must be known, which means a clean, open runout with no terrain trap, no cliff, no gully, no trees and no creek bed below. The escape route must exist, be visible, be genuinely reachable at the speed you will be travelling, and be rehearsed in your head before you move. A partner must be watching from a position that is itself safe, with rescue gear on and eyes on you for the entire time you are exposed. The whole group must know exactly what is about to happen. If any one of those is missing, the cut does not happen.
- The mechanics depend on speed and on staying above the failure. You start from a safe island at the top edge, generally on a ridge or a rock outcrop, and you cross the very top of the start zone on a slightly descending line carrying enough speed to reach the far side without slowing. The reason you cut high is that if the slab breaks, the fracture should be below your feet and the snow should move away from you. The reason you carry speed is that you are trying to be out of the path before anything gets moving. You never stop in the middle to look at the snow. You never cut a slope where the exit requires a turn you might not make. If in doubt about your ability to hold that line at that speed, you are not in a position to be doing this.
- The result of a cut tells you far less than people assume, and the asymmetry is severe. If it releases, you have learned something decisive and you have also just proved the day is worse than you hoped, so the sensible response is to leave that terrain type alone entirely. If it does not release, you have learned almost nothing. You loaded one line, near the top, in one spot, for one second. The slope may be perfectly capable of failing under the third rider, or lower down, or fifteen metres to the left. Treating a clean cut as a green light is one of the classic ways that good riders talk themselves onto slopes they had already decided against.
- There are whole categories of problem where cutting is simply the wrong tool. Persistent slab and deep persistent slab problems propagate, which means a failure does not stay local; it can pull out the entire feature, well beyond the small piece you thought you were testing, and it can release above you. Cutting a slope over a persistent weak layer is not a controlled action, it is a gamble with a slab you cannot outrun. Large or connected start zones are equally out of scope, because the whole premise of the technique depends on the release being small. The technique lives, if it lives anywhere for a recreational party, on small, isolated, wind loaded features with obvious clean runouts.
- Sled cutting carries extra hazard for reasons of physics, not attitude. A machine is heavy, so it applies far more load to the snowpack than a skier does, which makes it a much more effective trigger. It is also committed: a sled going across a slope cannot dart sideways or sit down and slide out the way a skier can, and if it bogs, stalls or catches an edge mid slope you are stationary in the start zone with a machine you cannot lift. If it does release, you can be separated from the sled, dragged with it, or pinned under it, and burial with a machine adds trauma risk on top of asphyxia. Any escape plan on a sled needs to be a line you can ride out at speed, chosen before you commit, with the throttle discipline to hold it.
- Understand where the real risk sits for sled riders, which is usually not cutting at all but climbing. A hill climb puts a heavy machine deep into the start zone, often in the steepest and most loaded part of the slope, frequently with the rider stalling out and turning around in exactly the worst place. Highmarking concentrates every element of the hazard: maximum load, maximum steepness, minimum escape options, and a strong social pull to go higher than the last track. It also tends to put several machines on the same slope, which is how multiple burials happen. If you take one thing from this lesson to your sledding, make it this: one machine on a slope at a time, always, with everyone else parked well out of the runout and watching.
- Be clear about the honest recreational conclusion. In the overwhelming majority of situations where a recreational party is thinking about cutting a slope, the correct decision is not to be on that slope. Cutting is a technique for managing a feature you have already decided to interact with for a specific reason, not a way to buy confidence about ground you are unsure of. The professional using it has training, a mental model of that specific slope built over a season, a partner system designed for exactly this, and often equipment and support you do not have. Wanting to cut a slope is usually a sign that you are unsure about it, and being unsure about it is a complete answer on its own.
- If you do want this skill, learn it in person from a qualified instructor, on real snow, with someone watching you. Reading about a ski cut is roughly as useful as reading about a rope rescue. The judgements that make it survivable are things like whether that exit is really reachable, whether that runout is really clean, whether the feature really is small, and whether you really can hold that speed under pressure. None of those transfer from a page. Ask about it explicitly in an avalanche course with field days, and be ready to hear an instructor tell you that you are not there yet.
Common Mistakes
Using a cut to decide whether a slope is safe. Fix: make the decision on forecast, problem type, terrain and consequence first, and understand that a cut can only ever confirm a no, never grant a yes.
- Cutting from too low on the slope. Fix: cut the very top of the start zone from a safe entry so any failure occurs below you, and abandon the idea if there is no safe entry point.
- Cutting with the group already spread out or partially in the runout. Fix: place everyone in a confirmed safe zone with eyes on you before anything moves, and confirm verbally that they are ready.
- Sled riders taking multiple machines onto a slope at once during hill climbs. Fix: one machine on the slope at a time, others parked outside the runout, and no second rider entering until the first is out and clear.
The Drill
Pick a small, low angle feature with a clean, open runout and no overhead hazard, and rehearse the sequence without any intention of triggering anything: identify the entry island, name the exit island out loud, describe the escape line, place your partner in a safe watching position, then make the traverse at full committed speed and stop only at the exit. Standard: your partner must be able to describe your escape line before you start, and you must reach the exit without slowing, turning or stopping. If you cannot meet that standard on easy ground, you have no business doing it on consequential ground.
This lesson describes a professional technique so that you can recognise it and understand its limits, not so that you can adopt it. Slope cutting done without training, on the wrong problem or the wrong feature, is a straightforward way to be killed. Learn it face to face from a qualified instructor in a course with field days, and accept that the standard answer for recreational parties is to choose different terrain.
