TEST SLOPES: READING SNOW BY RIDING IT

After this lesson you understand why modern avalanche practice leans on test slopes and terrain feedback rather than on digging pit after pit, how to cut a test slope that actually tells you something, and why the line down a slope you are worried about is almost never the edge.
The Technique
- Start with the honest limitation of the snow pit, because a generation of riders was taught to lean on it. A pit tells you what the snowpack is doing at that exact spot, at that exact elevation, on that exact aspect, at that moment. Move five degrees around the hill, change elevation, or cross a patch where rocks have kept the cover thin, and the release behaviour can be completely different. Pits are a genuine tool for understanding structure and they belong in a professional's kit. What they are not is a clearance certificate for the slope you are about to ride, and treating them that way has killed people who did everything they were taught.
- The second thing that changed is who is out there and when. The old advice was to stay home while it is dumping. Nobody does that any more. Storm days are exactly when riders want to be on the hill, in the helicopter or on the sled, and pretending otherwise produces advice that gets ignored rather than followed. So the modern question is not how to avoid avalanche terrain entirely, it is how to gather real information fast and pick fights you can win.
- The sled changes the arithmetic again, and riders coming from skiing routinely underestimate this. **A snowmobile puts far more force into the snowpack than a skier does**, concentrated, and it puts it in while you are moving fast and committed. A slope a skier can move across without consequence can be a very different proposition under a machine. Fewer options to bail, more force applied, and often no second chance.
- Which brings the whole thing to the discipline that matters: **pick the battle you can win**. Before committing to a slope you care about, find a small slope very close to it with **the same pitch and the same aspect**, and test that instead. Small enough that a release cannot bury anyone, close enough that it is genuinely representative, and chosen so that nothing about it can hurt you.
- The preconditions on that test are not optional and this is where people get it wrong. The test slope must have no terrain traps below it, a clean runout, defined safe zones, planned entry and exit, and your partners positioned in safety and ready to dig. You are deliberately trying to make a small piece of snow fail, so everything about the setup assumes it will. If you cannot set it up so that a release is a non-event, you have not found a test slope, you have found another avalanche slope.
- Then cut it, and cut it properly. Aggressively, more than once, and pay attention to what the snow does underneath you rather than to whether you got away with it. Does it crack. Does it settle. Does it move as a slab or shear as loose snow. Does it whumpf. Does it feel hollow. **Five minutes of that will tell you more about the slope you are about to ride than ten pits will**, because you have applied a realistic load, in realistic terrain, on the same pitch and aspect, and watched what actually happened.
- Now the part that runs against instinct, and it is worth sitting with. If you have decided to ride a slope that concerns you, one you cannot go around, the natural move is to hug the edge. It feels safer, closer to the trees, closer to an out. **It is usually the worse line.** The snowpack thins as you transition toward the trees, over a convex roll, alongside a spine, or anywhere rock is near the surface. Thin spots are where weak layers sit closest to the surface and where a rider's load reaches them most easily, which is why so many slides are triggered from exactly there.
- The corollary is what the good sled riders do: **aim for where the snowpack is deepest, usually the middle**. More snow between you and the weak layer, and your load spread through more of it. There is a second reason as well. On the edge you may tear out the adjacent slope, which can drag you somewhere you never planned to be, or load the very zone you nominated as safe. Down the deepest part, you at least fail in a place you chose.
- Be clear about what that is and is not, because this is the part that gets misread. Committing to the deepest part of the snowpack **does not mean it is safe. It means there is less chance of triggering it.** Those are completely different statements. What you are doing is a dynamic risk assessment with two separate axes: how likely you are to trigger something, and how catastrophic it is if you do. A lower chance of triggering a very large, very wide slope with a terrible runout may still be the worse bet than a higher chance on something small with a clean apron. **There is never one right answer.** The answer changes with the slope, the day, the snowpack and the group.
- And it is a crew decision, not a rider decision. The whole group weighs it, the whole group agrees it, and critically **it is validated in advance rather than accidentally run into at the time.** The difference between a plan and a drift is that somebody said it out loud before anyone dropped in. If you find yourself making this call mid-slope, on instinct, with the group strung out and nobody having discussed it, that is not a technique being applied, that is a situation happening to you.
- Underneath all of it is the change in thinking that matters most. The old model was that some slopes are safe and some are not, and if you stick to the safe ones you are fine. **Every slope in the backcountry carries risk, and the belief that you are completely safe because you stayed somewhere sensible is how experienced people die.** Terrain choice, group protocol, testing and honest odds, every day, on every slope.
Common Mistakes
Treating a pit as clearance for the slope. Fix: a pit describes one spot. Spatial variability is the whole problem, and it is why test slopes and terrain feedback carry more weight.
- Test slope with a terrain trap below it. Fix: if a release on your test slope could hurt somebody, it is not a test slope. Set it up so a slide is a non-event or do not do it.
- Hugging the edge of a slope you are worried about. Fix: the edge is usually the thin spot, and thin spots are trigger points. If you have committed, ride the deepest line.
- Believing a slope is safe. Fix: none of them are. The question is only what the odds are and whether you can survive being wrong.
The Drill
The paired slope habit. On your next day out, before committing to anything consequential, find and cut a small test slope of matching pitch and aspect with the group set up properly around it. Write down what you expected and what actually happened. Do it every day for a season and you will build a calibration that no amount of reading provides.
