After this lesson you can run a casualty and a whole party through a night in the field: shelter and warmth that holds until morning, a carer roster that does not burn out, observations recorded properly, and a handover ready before the rescue team arrives.

The Technique

  1. The most useful thing you can do early is admit the night is happening. Once the helicopter is grounded, the light is gone, the weather has closed or the ground team has told you first light, stop waiting and start running a night. Say it out loud to the group, because the switch changes everything: you build a real shelter instead of a windbreak, you ration fuel and batteries, you start a roster, and you tell people to sleep. The worst overnights are the ones where the party spent the whole night expecting rescue in the next hour, made no plan, burned their fuel and their people, and met the morning with nothing left.
  2. Move the casualty as little as possible and as much as necessary, then build for the whole night rather than the next hour. Ground insulation is the single biggest lever you have, and it beats anything you put on top: packs, foam mats, rope bags, boughs, spare clothing, anything that separates a body from snow. Then layers over, a vapour barrier outside those, head covered, face clear and visible. Then wind protection, then a roof if you can manage it. Leave an entrance out of the wind, keep ventilation if you are running a stove, and keep the casualty where you can see their face without unwrapping them. While you are at it, choose and clear the access or landing area for the morning, because doing that in the dark with people to spare is easier than doing it at dawn with nobody left.
