WHITEOUT ON A GLACIER: NAVIGATING WHEN YOU CANNOT SEE

After this lesson you understand why a whiteout on glaciated terrain is a different order of problem, why nobody is coming to fly you out of it, and how people have actually been brought home: on recorded GPS tracks, not on eyesight.
The Technique
- Understand the specific horror of it first. In a full whiteout on a glacier there is no horizon, no shadow and no contrast. You cannot tell up from down, you cannot see a few metres in front of you, and your inner ear will confidently lie to you about which way the slope runs. **Add crevasses to that and you have terrain you cannot cross by feel, in conditions where you cannot see.** People stop where they are because every direction looks identical, and every direction includes holes.
- **Nobody is coming while it lasts, and you need to know that before you go up there.** Police and rescue helicopters do not fly into those conditions, and they are right not to. Dan has been part of search parties for people caught out on glaciers when weather rolled in, and the pattern is consistent: the aircraft stay on the ground until it clears.
- **What has actually worked, more than once, is local professionals riding out to the last known position and navigating back on GPS mapping alone.** No visual reference in the terrain, no landmarks, no horizon. Pacing back through crevassed ground on a screen, following a track. That is the real rescue story, and it tells you exactly what to prepare.
- So the preparation is the lesson, and it is nearly all done before you leave. **Record your track on the way in, every time, without exception.** Mapping apps built for this, such as Gaia, are inexpensive and accurate, and a recorded inbound track is the single most valuable thing you can own in a whiteout, because retracing a line you have already safely travelled is the one navigation problem with a known answer.
- **Download the maps offline before you go.** A mapping app without cached tiles is a blank screen at the worst possible moment, and the top of a glacier is not where you discover your maps needed a connection.
- **Drop waypoints as you travel**, on anything that matters: the vehicle, the drop point, the point you crossed a bridge or a crevasse field, the last spot with reception, the place you turned around. In flat light a waypoint is worth more than a memory, and your memory of featureless terrain is worse than you believe.
- **Then treat the phone or GPS unit as life support, because in that scenario it is.** Keep it warm against your body, since cold flattens a battery fast. Carry a charged power bank and keep that warm too. Use aeroplane mode rather than letting it burn charge hunting for a tower that is not there. **Preserve signal and battery deliberately from the moment things start going wrong, not once the battery warning appears.**
- On the day, the decision that keeps people alive is turning around earlier than feels necessary. Weather on glaciated terrain closes faster than anyone expects, and the margin you need is not the margin back to the vehicle, **it is the margin back to terrain you can navigate blind.** Set a turnaround time at the trailhead, and treat it as a rule rather than an opinion.
- If it closes on you anyway: stop moving before you are in the crevassed section rather than after, get the track up on the screen, and follow it back deliberately, slowly, and as a group with everyone in contact. If you cannot navigate reliably at all, and you are on ground you know is not crevassed, shelter and wait, because a stationary party on safe ground is a rescue and a moving party in a crevasse field is a recovery.
- And the point that should shape how you choose trips at all: **this is precisely why glaciated terrain belongs to guided operations with local knowledge, not to visitors with a good app.** The people who came and got them knew where the crevasses were before they turned their screens on. The technology retraced the route. The knowledge chose it.
Common Mistakes
Not recording the track on the way in. Fix: start the recording at the vehicle, every trip. It costs nothing and it is the thing that brings you home.
- Relying on a mapping app without offline maps downloaded. Fix: cache the area before you leave reception.
- Letting the phone hunt for signal all day. Fix: aeroplane mode, kept warm, with a warm power bank. Treat the battery as a rescue resource.
- Assuming a helicopter will come. Fix: they do not fly in whiteout. Plan as though the only rescue is the one you can walk or ride back to.
The Drill
The retrace. On a clear day in easy terrain, record a track out, then put the map away, and navigate back using only the recorded line on the screen. Do it until following a track is boring. The day you need it is not the day to learn which button shows your breadcrumb.
Glaciated terrain carries crevasse hazard that no navigation skill removes, and this lesson does not qualify anyone to travel on it.
