Waterproof ratings measure hydrostatic head - the height of a water column, in millimetres, a fabric withstands before it leaks. 5K (5,000 mm) survives light snow, not a full storm day. 10K handles most lift days. 20K and above is where sustained wet weather, pack straps and chairlift seats stop getting through. Gore-Tex is a membrane brand, not a number - its edge is proven durability, not a higher rating.
What does the mm rating actually measure?
The number is a hydrostatic head test result. A column of water is stood on the fabric and raised until water forces its way through; the height it reaches, in millimetres, is the rating. A 10K fabric held back a 10,000 mm column. That is the industry-standard published meaning, and it is measured on a new, clean swatch in a lab - which is the first place marketing and reality part company.
The test measures resistance to pressure, not hours of rain. A real day in the mountains applies pressure in ways the lab never does: pack straps grinding wet fabric into your shoulders, your backside planted on a soaked chairlift or sled seat, knees in the slush while you fix a binding. Which is why jackets always leak at the shoulders, seat and knees first.
Why does a 5K jacket soak through on a real day?
Two reasons, and only one is a genuine leak.
First, pressure. Standing in falling snow, a 5K shell is fine. Sitting on a wet lift, kneeling in slush or hauling a loaded pack concentrates force on small areas of wet fabric, and localised pressure is exactly what a low rating cannot resist. The water is being pushed through, not seeping through.
Second, wet-out. Every shell carries a DWR (durable water repellent) finish on the face fabric that makes water bead and roll off. DWR wears away with use, dirt and washing. Once it goes, the outer fabric saturates and darkens. The waterproof layer underneath may still be holding perfectly, but a soaked face fabric stops breathing, so your own sweat condenses inside. You feel wet, cold and betrayed - and the jacket has not technically leaked. Most "my jacket leaks" complaints are wet-out.
What do breathability numbers feel like?
Breathability is usually published as MVTR - grams of water vapour a square metre of fabric passes in 24 hours (g/m2/24h). As rough industry bands: low ratings feel clammy the moment you work hard, mid ratings keep pace with lift-accessed riding, and the higher tiers are what you want for genuine uphill effort. Brands use different test methods, so treat the figure as a class, not a spec you can compare to the decimal between labels. A big pit zip you actually open outperforms a small MVTR difference every time.
Is it the DWR that's failed, or the membrane?
- Water stops beading, the outer fabric darkens and soaks, you feel damp all over: DWR failure. Wash the jacket, reproof it with a wash-in or spray-on DWR, and reactivate with gentle heat if the care label allows. Cheap fix, do it every season.
- Water arrives inside at seams or pressure points while the face fabric still beads: seam tape or membrane failure. Peeling tape is repairable; a delaminating membrane is a jacket on its way out.
Coating vs membrane: what's under the hood?
Budget shells usually rely on a polyurethane coating sprayed on the back of the face fabric. Coatings work when new, then abrade and break down with washing and flexing. Membranes - a separate waterproof-breathable film laminated into the fabric sandwich - cost more and last longer. The 2-layer, 2.5-layer and 3-layer labels describe how well that membrane is protected; 3-layer laminates take pack straps and sled abuse best.
Does a 30-40K no-name membrane really stack up against Gore-Tex?
On the hydrostatic head test, yes - the number is the number, and plenty of house-brand membranes post 30K and 40K honestly. What the headline figure cannot tell you is how the garment performs after fifty days of straps, crashes and wash cycles. Gore-Tex's real product is consistency: certified laminates, controlled seam taping, durability testing, and a warranty culture to match. The credible alternatives - eVent's air-permeable construction, Dermizax's stretchy non-porous film, Sympatex, Pertex Shield and the major brands' in-house laminates - are genuine membranes with different characters. Judge the whole garment: membrane type, layer construction, seam taping, zips and warranty, not the biggest number on the hang tag.
What should you actually buy?
- Lift days: 10-20K with fully taped seams is plenty. Your real enemies are wet chairlifts and dying DWR, so reproof each season.
- Backcountry touring: breathability first. A 3-layer shell in the upper waterproof tiers, or an air-permeable membrane, with pit zips you use.
- Sled days: the harshest test - constant spray, a wet seat, engine heat and branches. Go 20K plus, 3-layer construction, a burly face fabric and full seam taping. This is where cheap shells go to die.
