The Technique
- Work out what load you are actually asking for. A vehicle sitting on firm level ground needs a small fraction of its weight to move. Bury it to the axles in wet clay and add suction, and the demand climbs steeply and unpredictably, because you are now paying for shear in the soil and for the vacuum under each tyre as well as for rolling resistance. Add gradient and you add a share of the vehicle's full weight, straight up. The point is not to memorise a number, it is to stop assuming the load is modest. Reduce it before you rig: dig the tyres free to break suction, clear the ground ahead of the wheels, drop the pressures, get the vehicle into neutral or gently driving with you, and straighten the steering. Every one of those makes the difference between a comfortable pull and a rig loaded to its limit.
- Choose the anchor like it is the only thing between the line and the crew, because it is. A living tree wants a solid trunk, roots in dry firm ground, and no sign of rot, fire scar or lean. Rig low on the trunk, at the base, so you are not levering the root plate out of the ground. Always use a wide tree protector strap: bare rope or cable round a trunk cuts the cambium and kills the tree, and a sharp bark edge cuts the rope in return. Rock anchors need to be tested by pushing hard, because the boulder you can see is often the small end of nothing. When one anchor is marginal, share the load across two with a bridle, and keep the two legs close to parallel. The geometry is unforgiving: as the included angle between the legs opens, tension in each leg rises, and by the time that angle reaches one hundred and twenty degrees each leg is carrying as much as the total load you are trying to share. A wide bridle does not halve the load, it multiplies it.
- Set the direction of pull before you set anything else. Pull a bogged vehicle out along the path it went in, because that ground is already compacted and the tyres are already sitting in their own tracks. Keep the line as close as you can to straight in front of the winch and low, so the drum wraps evenly and the rope does not pile against one flange and jam. Any significant side pull needs a redirect block to bring it back into line, not a shrug. On the recovered vehicle, use a rated recovery point bolted into the chassis, and know which of the two front points on your vehicle is a recovery point and which is a tie-down eye for shipping: they often sit within a hand span of each other and only one of them is meant for this.
