DRIVER AND SPOTTER: THE TWO PERSON SYSTEM
13 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you can operate as half of a disciplined two person driving team, with clear authority, an agreed signal set and a debrief habit, and apply it directly to family and group touring.
The Technique
- The two person system exists because a driver cannot see the ground under their vehicle, cannot see the underbody clearances, cannot judge the vehicle's angle accurately from inside it, and is simultaneously running the machine. That is too many jobs. Splitting them is not a courtesy or a sign of inexperience, it is how competent crews operate, and the highest level competitors use it on every obstacle without exception. The division is simple and it must be explicit: the driver owns the vehicle's inputs, throttle, brake, gear, steering and the decision to commit. The spotter owns the information, the line, the clearances and the stop. Neither does the other's job. A spotter who starts second-guessing throttle is out of their lane, and a driver who starts choosing their own line mid-obstacle has just made the spotter useless and dangerous.
- The stop call is the foundation and it must be absolute. Any person, driver, spotter or bystander, can call stop, and the vehicle stops immediately with no argument, no interpretation, and no completing the current movement first. This works only if you never punish a stop call. If someone stops the attempt and it turns out they were wrong, the response is thanks, we reset, not an eye roll. The moment a stop call carries a social cost, people hesitate, and hesitation is exactly the failure you built the system to prevent. Competitors treat this as a rule rather than a courtesy, and remote touring groups should too, because the person who sees the sliding rock or the wheel about to drop off a shelf is often not the driver.
