The Technique
- The problem out here is distance and vibration. The Gibb River Road and its side tracks shake vehicles apart, and the gaps between fuel are serious. Prep is about range and rattle.
- Range: find the longest fuel gap on your route, apply worst-case consumption - corrugations and sand raise it - and add a reserve you never plan to touch.
- Water: plan generously. Common planning figures run four to seven litres per person per day for drinking alone in hot country, plus cooking and washing - confirm the figure with the reviewing pro - and carry enough that a 48-hour delay is boring, not dangerous.
- Vibration-proofing: pressures down for corrugations, a torque check on racks and accessories before and during the trip, chafe points taped and padded, drawers and fridge slides latched, dust sealing checked.
