WHY UNDERINFLATED TYRES ARE FAR MORE DANGEROUS THAN OVERINFLATED ONES

After this lesson you understand why underinflation, not overinflation, is the more likely cause of a high-speed blowout, and you set and check pressures so the failure never gets started.
The Technique
- Most people assume overinflation is the bigger blowout risk. It is not. Underinflation is by far the more likely cause of a catastrophic, high-speed tyre failure, and it is the one people drive around on for weeks without noticing.
- Sidewall flex generates heat. An underinflated tyre deforms more with every single rotation. That constant bending works the rubber, the belts and the cords, and all of that work comes out as heat. Rubber does not shed heat well, so it accumulates.
- Heat destroys the structure from the inside. As internal temperature climbs, the bond between the tread, the belts and the casing softens. Once that bond begins to fail, the tyre is coming apart, it is only a question of when.
- Speed multiplies everything. Flex cycles per minute scale with speed, and the forces involved climb steeply. At highway speed an underinflated tyre can develop a standing wave, a visible ripple that travels around the tread as the rubber can no longer spring back into shape before the next contact. Once a standing wave forms, failure is usually seconds to minutes away, not hours. A tyre that will happily do 60 km/h underinflated can shred itself at 110 km/h.
- Overinflation fails differently. A stiffer, over-pressured tyre has a smaller contact patch, less grip, a harsher ride, accelerated centre-tread wear, and much less tolerance for impact. Hit a pothole or a sharp rock and you can cut the casing or crack a rim. Those are real problems. But overinflation does not generate the continuous flex-heat cycle that cooks an underinflated tyre from the inside out. Given the choice between a few psi over and a few psi under at 110 km/h, over is the safer error.
- To be clear: this is not permission to run high pressures. It is a statement about which direction of error is more likely to end with a blowout on the highway.
- Check pressures cold, before you drive, not after you have been on the road for an hour. Run the vehicle placard pressure for the load you are actually carrying. A loaded ute or a trailer tow needs more than an empty one.
- Never air down for the trail and then run highway distances without re-inflating. This is the single most common version of this failure among off-roaders. Carry a compressor and use it at the gate.
- Hot days, heavy loads, long high-speed runs: the margin for underinflation shrinks in all three.
- A tyre that has been run flat or badly underinflated has already been damaged. Re-inflating it does not undo that. Have it inspected.
Common Mistakes
Assuming overinflation is the bigger blowout risk and paying no attention to a soft corner. Fix: treat underinflation as the failure that destroys tyres at speed, and check before every highway run.
- Checking pressures at the servo after an hour on the road. Fix: check cold, before you drive, so the number you read is the number you set.
- Running placard pressure for an empty vehicle while loaded or towing. Fix: set for the load you are actually carrying.
- Airing down at the gate and driving highway distances home on trail pressures. Fix: carry a compressor and re-inflate before you rejoin the highway, every time.
- Re-inflating a tyre that has been run flat and putting it straight back into service. Fix: the damage is already done, so have it inspected.
The Drill
In the driveway, before the vehicle has moved that day, check and record cold pressures on all four corners and the spare with one gauge, and compare each to the placard figure for the load you are carrying. Repeat it loaded, the morning after a long trip, and again at the gate straight after a trail run so you see how far you actually aired down. The standard: you know your placard figures without looking, no corner is meaningfully out from its neighbours, and the spare is set.
Correct pressure is a safety-critical item, not a detail. If you feel a new vibration or hear a rhythmic slapping at speed, slow down gently and get off the road. Do not stab the brakes. A tyre that has been run flat or badly underinflated has already been damaged, and re-inflating it does not undo that.
