THROTTLE CONTROL - THE FOUNDATION OF EVERY DRIFT

The Technique
- Reframe the pedal. In grip driving, throttle means "go faster". In drift, throttle is your angle control. More throttle spins the rears faster, breaks more traction, and pushes the car to more angle. Less throttle lets the rears hook up and the car straightens.
- The danger zone is the lift. A sudden full lift mid-drift regrips the rear tyres while the car is still crossed up. That is where snap spins and tank-slappers come from. Teach a progressive squeeze off, never an abrupt lift.
- Wheel speed vs road speed. In a drift the rear tyres are turning faster than the car is travelling. The gap between the two is your slip. You are managing that gap with your right foot, constantly.
- The 10 percent rule of thumb. Adjust throttle in small increments and wait half a beat for the car to respond. The car always answers late - riders of every discipline know this feeling. Inputs stack.
- Foot position and smoothness. Heel planted on the floor, ball of the foot on the pedal, adjustments from the ankle not the hip. Demonstrate the difference on camera with a footwell shot.
- Listen to the car. Engine note tells you rear wheel speed before your body feels it. Train the ear alongside the foot.
Common Mistakes
Stabbing the throttle on-off. Fix: practise holding a fixed small opening through a full skidpan circle before you are allowed to modulate.
- Lifting completely when the angle scares you. Fix: train "squeeze off, never snap off" until it is reflex - roll out of the pedal over a full second.
- Chasing the car with steering when the real problem is throttle. Fix: freeze your hands for one lap of donuts and correct with foot only.
**The drill:** On a skidpan, hold a steady-state donut around a single cone for 30 seconds at constant angle using throttle only, hands as still as possible. Then widen and tighten the circle twice using only the pedal. Second gear, low speed.
**Safety:** Closed circuit or skidpan only, never public roads. Helmet on, window up or arm-restraint rules per venue. Fire extinguisher mounted and reachable. Know where the run-off is before your first lap and never treat it as part of the track. If the car spins, both feet in - clutch and brake - and hands off the wheel spokes.
