CAR SETUP BASICS FOR DRIFTING

The Technique
- The non-negotiable: a limited slip differential. An open diff spins one wheel and kills the drift. A proper LSD (or, at absolute entry level, a shimmed or locked diff - flag venue rules) is the first dollar spent. Everything else is optional on day one.
- Tyres set the difficulty level. Cheap hard rears make the car easier to slide at low speed and cost less to learn on. Save the semi-slicks for later. Fronts should always be the best tyre on the car - they do the steering and the saving.
- Pressures as a tuning tool. Start rears around road pressure and experiment upward - higher rear pressure generally breaks away easier. Give ranges on camera and tell viewers to confirm with their venue and tyre. Confirm sensible starting pressures with the reviewing pro.
- Seat, wheel, pedals. You cannot catch a car you are bracing against. Sit closer than road driving feels natural, shoulders in contact with the seat at full steering reach, so fast hands are possible.
- What to remove and check: loose items out of the cabin, battery tied down, fluids topped, wheel nuts torqued, brakes bled, tow points identified. This is scrutineering 101.
- What NOT to buy yet: coilovers, big angle kits, hydraulic handbrakes. They help later. Skill first, parts second.
Common Mistakes
Buying angle kit and coilovers before an LSD. Fix: diff first, always - explain why on camera with a one-wheel-fire demonstration.
- Sticky rear tyres too early. Fix: hard budget rears until you can link the skidpan course both directions.
- Seat too far back, arms straight. Fix: the "wrist on top of the wheel" reach test, shown to camera.
**The drill:** At home: set your seating position with the wrist test, then do 20 fast hand-over-hand steering shuffles lock to lock, parked, engine off. If you cannot reach full lock smoothly, move the seat, not your hands.
**Safety:** Setup work is safety work - a car that passes scrutineering is the baseline, not the goal. Fire extinguisher mounted with a metal bracket, not cable ties. Helmet minimum at every venue; cage and harness before any competition or high-speed layout. Never drift a car with a known steering, brake or wheel-bearing fault. Track only, without exception.
