TYRE SELECTION & HEAT MANAGEMENT
8 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you can choose front and rear tyres appropriate to your power and level, and manage pressures and heat across a track day so the car behaves the same at 4 pm as it did at 9 am.
The Technique
- Two different jobs. Fronts steer and save - buy grip. Rears are consumables that set your difficulty level - buy predictability and quantity. The best-tyre-on-the-front rule from the Foundations module now gets its full explanation.
- Matching rears to power. Low power wants harder, cheaper rears that break away easily; higher power can use and needs more rear grip to keep wheel speed useful. Grade the choice against the car honestly rather than by what looks fast.
- Pressure across the day. Pressures rise as tyres heat; the car you set at 9 am is not the car at noon. Teach checking hot pressures between runs and adjusting to a target hot number, not a cold one. Provide typical hot-target ranges and flag them for the pro to confirm.
