COMPOSITION AND MOVEMENT: MAKING A RIDER LOOK FAST

After this lesson you can frame and move a camera so that a rider at a given speed reads as fast, and you can tell the difference between a clip and a shot before you press record.
The Technique
- A frame is a set of decisions about what to leave out. The rule of thirds is a starting point, not a law: place the rider off centre and the frame gains tension and somewhere for them to go. Which third depends on direction of travel. Give the rider lead room, the space ahead of them in the direction they are moving, and the frame implies momentum. Put them hard against the leading edge and the frame implies they are about to leave, which is useful for exits and useless for everything else. Centre them dead middle and the shot goes still and formal, which is right for a portrait and wrong for a turn.
- Depth is what sells speed, and depth comes from foreground. A rider crossing an empty white field at forty kilometres an hour looks like a slow moving dot, because nothing in the frame changes at a different rate. Put a branch, a snow bank, a rock, a fence post or a stand of trees between the lens and the subject and the near objects sweep past while the far objects barely move. That difference in apparent speed is parallax, and it is the strongest speed cue you have. The extreme version is letting the rider pass within a metre or two of the lens so they smear through frame, which is one of the few shots that works with no other content at all.
- Height changes everything. Standing at chest height gives you the view every phone in the world has already delivered. Put the camera at ski, wheel or track height and the rider gains size, the ground rushes underneath, and the horizon sits low so the subject breaks the sky. Get lower still, lens in the snow or the dust, and the spray comes over the top of the frame. High angles do the opposite: they flatten pitch, shrink the rider and turn the terrain into a map, which is why an overhead drone shot of a steep line so often looks tame. Use high angles to explain geography and low angles to sell effort.
- The background is where terrain lives. Shoot straight down a steep slope and it looks flat, because you have removed the reference. Shoot across the slope from the side, with the skyline or a level object in frame, and the angle becomes readable. The same is true for a drift car, where the background tells the viewer how much the car is rotating, and for a jet ski, where a fixed shoreline is what proves the boat is moving. Before you frame, find one thing in the background that is vertical or level in the real world and let the viewer see it.
- Panning is a physical skill and you need to practise it. Set your feet for where the shot ends, not where it starts, then wind your torso back to the start position so you unwind into the shot rather than running out of rotation. Pick the subject up before they enter the frame, match their speed so they stay at a consistent point in frame, and follow through after they exit rather than stopping dead on them. Panning speed interacts with shutter: at a correct 180 degree shutter a fast whip pan smears the background into strobing bands, which can be a deliberate effect between shots and is a mess in the middle of one.
- A moving camera reads faster than a static one, even at the same subject speed. If the camera travels with the subject, the background streaks while the rider stays sharp, and the viewer feels attached to the rider rather than watching from the fence. You get this from a follow sled, a chase bike, a tow rope, a drone, a car on a dirt road, or on foot with a short run in. The counterpart matters too: a locked off shot with a rider passing through frame gives the edit a moment of stillness, and a film made entirely of moving cameras is exhausting. Aim for both in every location.
- Scale needs a human and it needs time. A wide shot of a big mountain face is a postcard until a rider appears in it, at which point the size of the terrain becomes obvious because the viewer knows how big a person is. Hold that wide longer than feels comfortable, four or five seconds at least, because the audience needs time to find the rider and then read the scale around them. Add a foreground element of known size, a tree line, a sled, a fence, and the depth reads too. The mistake is shooting only wides, which robs the film of intimacy, or only tights, which leaves the viewer with no idea where they are.
- A clip is a recording. A shot is a decision. A shot has an intention you could state in one sentence, a defined start and end, a length you chose, and a place in a sequence you are already imagining. Before you press record, know what the shot is for: this is the wide that establishes the bowl, this is the detail of the edge biting, this is the reaction at the bottom. Coverage is the practical version of this. For every feature, try to come away with a wide, a medium, a detail and a human moment, because those four cut together into a sequence and a pile of similar mediums does not.
- Shoot so the shots can be joined. Roll for a few seconds before the action and keep rolling after it so the editor has handles at both ends. Keep screen direction consistent within a sequence: if the rider moves left to right in the wide, do not cut to a shot where they move right to left unless you have shown the turn that justifies it. Get a second pass whenever the terrain and the rider allow, one for the wide and one for the tight, and tell the rider you want the same line so the two passes cut together. Shooting for the cut is the single habit that separates footage that assembles easily from footage that never assembles at all.
Common Mistakes
Framing every shot with the rider centred and the horizon through the middle. Fix: move the subject off centre with lead room and push the horizon into the top or bottom third.
- Standing at eye level for the whole day. Fix: put the camera on the ground for at least a third of your shots and see what the terrain does.
- Shooting straight down the fall line so a steep slope looks flat. Fix: move across the slope and include a vertical or level reference in the background.
- Starting the record button as the rider enters frame and stopping as they leave. Fix: three seconds before, three seconds after, every time.
- Filling the card with wide shots of terrain and no human moments. Fix: for every feature, deliberately collect a wide, a medium, a detail and a face.
The Drill
Choose one feature and shoot it as a six shot sequence in a single session: wide establishing, low angle with foreground, tracking or panning shot, tight detail, reverse angle, and a human reaction. Cut them in that order with no music and no effects. You pass when a viewer who was not there can describe the terrain, the direction of travel and how hard the feature was, from the sequence alone, and when the cut has no direction jumps.
Low angles put your body and your head in the fall line, which is exactly where the rider is going. Agree the line before the run, place yourself beside it rather than in it, and give yourself an escape step you have already rehearsed. Kneeling in snow beside a track makes you invisible to anyone coming from above, so post a spotter or pick a spot with a clear uphill sightline. Running in for a tracking shot on ice, sand or loose rock is how ankles go. Never ask a rider to hit a feature harder or closer to the lens than they would if you were not there.
