EXPOSURE, SHUTTER AND WHY YOUR ACTION FOOTAGE LOOKS WRONG

The Technique
- Every camera balances three controls: aperture, shutter and ISO. Aperture sets how much light the lens passes and how much of the scene is sharp behind and in front of your subject. ISO sets how hard the camera amplifies the signal, and amplification brings noise. Shutter sets how long each frame is exposed. In stills you trade these freely. In video you do not, because one of the three has a second job that has nothing to do with brightness. Shutter controls motion blur, and motion blur is the thing your eye reads as movement. Once you accept that shutter is spoken for, exposure becomes a two lever problem instead of three, and that is why action shooters live and die by neutral density filters.
- The convention is the 180 degree shutter rule. Set your shutter speed to roughly double your frame rate: 1/50 of a second at 25 frames per second, 1/48 at 24, 1/60 at 30, 1/120 at 60. Cameras that speak in shutter angle instead of shutter speed give you the same thing at 180 degrees, and the angle stays correct as you change frame rate, which is why cinema cameras use it. The reason this number exists is mechanical history, but the reason it survived is that half a frame of exposure leaves each frame with a specific amount of blur, and that blur is what a century of film has trained everyone's eye to accept as normal movement.
- Break the rule upward and the footage stutters. At 1/1000 of a second each frame is a frozen slice with hard edges and nothing connecting it to the next frame, so a pan across trees strobes, a spinning wheel looks like a stop motion toy, and a rider crossing frame moves in discrete jumps. Watch any phone footage shot in bright sun on auto and you are watching this. Break the rule downward and you get smear: a quarter second exposure turns a rider into a ghost. There are times a fast shutter is right, and they are specific. You want it when you plan to pull still frames, when the client needs to study technique, and when you deliberately want a hard mechanical look for a short burst.
- Frame rate is a separate decision and it should be made before the shutter, not after. Twenty four or twenty five frames per second is the cinema rate and it is what makes a trip film feel like a film. Thirty is the safe broadcast and social rate. Fifty or sixty gives you a modest slow motion when conformed to a twenty five or thirty timeline, roughly half speed, which is enough for most riding. One hundred and twenty gives you real slow motion, and two hundred and forty gives you the kind of slow that only holds attention for a second or two. The rule to internalise is that you shoot at one rate and play back at another, and the ratio between them is your slow motion factor.
- Slow motion is not free. Every doubling of frame rate halves your exposure time per frame, so 120 frames per second at the correct shutter needs roughly four stops more light than 25 does. Many cameras also crop the sensor, drop bitrate, drop colour depth or increase rolling shutter skew at high rates, and most drop audio entirely. There is a creative cost too. Slow motion flattens intensity. Everything at 120 looks equally graceful, which means nothing looks fast. Choose the moments that earn it, usually the impact, the spray, the landing, the moment of failure, and shoot the rest at your base rate so the slow moments have something to be slow against.
- Neutral density filters exist because of the shutter rule. On a bright snow field you may need f/16 and base ISO just to hold 1/50 of a second, and f/16 on most lenses is soft and puts every speck of dust on your sensor into the shot. An ND filter is a grey window that removes light without changing colour, letting you shoot at the aperture you want and the shutter you must. They are counted in stops: three stops, six stops, ten stops, sometimes labelled ND8, ND64, ND1000. Bright snow at midday commonly wants six stops or more. Variable NDs are convenient but can cross polarise into an X shaped stain at the strong end, so learn where yours goes bad and stay inside it. Action cameras and drones take small screw or clip filters and the same logic applies.
- Snow and water break light meters. A meter assumes the world averages to middle grey, so it sees a white slope and darkens it until it is grey, giving you dull snow and a rider who is a silhouette. The fix is to overexpose relative to the meter, usually by one to two stops, and then verify rather than trust. Use the histogram and push the bulk of the data toward the right without letting it stack against the wall. Use zebras set near the clipping point so you can see the exact patches of snow that are gone. Blown snow cannot be recovered in any grade, so protect the brightest sunlit slope and let the shadowed side sit dark. On water, the same problem arrives as sun glitter, and you expose for the boat and rider while accepting that specular sparkle will clip.
- Log and flat picture profiles capture more of the range between the darkest and brightest parts of a scene, which matters enormously on snow where the gap between lit slope and tree shadow is huge. The cost is that log footage looks washed out until graded, needs to be exposed carefully and often slightly brighter than you expect, and punishes underexposure with noise in the shadows. Action camera flat profiles are thinner than they look and can fall apart under a strong grade. If you are not going to grade, do not shoot flat. A well exposed standard profile beats a badly exposed log file every time.
- A starting point you can build from. Bluebird snow day, mirrorless camera, 25 frames per second, 1/50 of a second, base ISO, f/4 to f/5.6, six stop ND, exposure compensation up about one and a third stops, zebras on, white balance set manually around daylight so your clips match. Overcast, same rates, drop the ND to three stops or none, open up, and watch that you are not drifting into a high ISO you do not need. Change one thing at a time, know why you changed it, and write the settings down for the first few days until they become automatic.
Common Mistakes
Leaving shutter on auto so the camera picks 1/2000 in the sun. Fix: lock shutter to double your frame rate and control brightness with ND and aperture only.
- Shooting the entire day at 120 frames per second in case something good happens. Fix: shoot at base rate and switch up deliberately for the moments you have decided deserve it.
- Trusting the meter on snow and coming home with grey slopes and dark riders. Fix: add one to two stops of compensation, then confirm with the histogram and zebras before the rider drops in.
- Forgetting the ND is on when the light drops or you move into trees. Fix: check the front of the lens at every transition, the same way you check your bindings.
- Setting white balance to auto so every clip shifts colour and nothing matches in the edit. Fix: set it by hand at the start of each light condition and leave it.
The Drill
Pick one fixed scene with bright and dark areas in it. Shoot the same twenty second pan six times: at 1/50, 1/125, 1/500 and 1/2000 with correct exposure, then at 1/50 both two stops under and two stops over. Cut all six together in order and watch on a large screen. You pass when you can name the shutter speed of any unlabelled clip from a mate's footage on the first viewing, and when you can pick the two stop overexposed clip without checking a histogram.
Fiddling with settings is a head down activity and terrain does not pause for it. Set the camera before you get to the feature, not on it. On snow, standing still to change filters at the top of a run puts you in a fall line and in someone's blind spot, so step to the side of the track and tell the group what you are doing. Bare hands on cold metal go numb fast and numb hands drop filters and lens caps into deep snow. Nothing here is worth changing a riding decision. If the light is right but the slope is not, the slope wins.
