BARREL ROLL ENTRY: SPEED & ANGLE
10 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you understand the barrel roll's mechanics - the angled approach, the carve-and-flick that creates the corkscrew - and you have a staged entry progression to take to your coach.
The Technique
- What a barrel roll is mechanically: an off-axis sideways rotation - the ski corkscrews over a horizontal axis while travelling forward - launched from an angled hit on a wake or chop face, not a vertical flip.
- The approach line. Cross the launch face at an angle rather than square. The angle of attack sets how much of the launch turns into sideways rotation versus straight air. Start shallow and small.
- The carve loads the trick. A committed carve toward the face compresses the hull and your legs; the release of that carve as you leave the lip is what starts the roll. Arms steer it, but legs and hull load it.
- 3 more technique steps
- The 3 mistakes that undo it, with fixes
- The drill that builds the reflex
- The safety non-negotiables
