SUB-FLIP: YOUR FIRST INVERT
12 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you understand why the sub-flip is the standard first invert - low speed, water-assisted rotation - and you know the sequence and preparation well enough to attempt it under a coach's direction.
The Technique
- Why the sub comes first. The sub-flip uses the water itself to do the work: bury the nose, let water resistance stop the hull while momentum and throttle drive the ski up and over. Speeds are low, so consequence is lower than any wake-launched invert. That is why it is the traditional first flip - confirm the pro agrees with this ordering.
- The setup. Modest speed, deep water, weight shifted to drive the bow down deliberately - the opposite of every instinct built so far. The ski submarines nose-first.
- The pop. As the nose buries and the hull loads against the water, commit weight back and feed throttle; the buoyancy and thrust pitch the ski up and over its tail. Timing the throttle against the stall is the entire trick.
