After this lesson you can read a break well enough to choose your window, use a moving wave face as a ramp, and get yourself and your ski out of surf when it goes wrong.

The Technique

Everything starts on the beach before the ski goes in. Watch the water for a proper stretch of time, not a glance from the ramp. You are looking for swell direction and period, because period tells you how much power sits under the surface, and a long period swell of modest height carries far more weight than a short choppy one of the same size. Find the sets and time the lulls between them. Find the channel where the water is going back out, find the impact zone where it is unloading, and find the boundary of whatever is making the wave break, which is a sandbank, a reef or a point. Mark them against fixed objects on land so you can still locate them once you are sitting out there with no perspective.
Accept that ocean technique is a different craft from flat water technique. On flat water the surface is a fixed reference and you are the only thing moving. In swell the water moves under you, so your speed over ground and your speed relative to the water face are two different numbers, and the ramp you are aiming at is travelling towards you and changing shape as it comes. Your landing zone will not be where it was when you left the water. Riders who bring a pure flat water game to the ocean get caught out by exactly this: the timing that worked on a wake does not survive a face that is rising while you approach it.
