The Technique
- Understand what lets a ski go under and come back. A freestyle hull is sealed and self bailing, with its volume placed so it recovers predictably rather than corking sideways, and the engine keeps breathing through an airbox and hull space that stay dry while the deck is submerged. The pump keeps making thrust underwater as long as the intake stays fed and the engine keeps its air. What fights you the whole time is buoyancy: the hull wants to come up, hard, and the entire trick family is about controlling that rise rather than creating it. If your ship takes water on, none of the following behaves the same way twice.
- The sub entry is a weight transfer, not a throttle stab. Approach at moderate speed, move your weight forward over the bars, and drive the bow down with your body while feeding just enough throttle to keep the ski moving through the transition. The critical moment is when the deck goes under and the water closes over the tray, because the drag changes suddenly and the ski will try to pitch or roll. Keep your hands low, arms bent, feet loaded, and hold your line. Take a breath before you go and hold it rather than gasping at the surface. Your first ten subs will feel violent and will settle into being quiet once you stop fighting the hull.
