ROTATION CONTROL: BACKFLIPS AND INVERTED TRICKS
13 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you understand where rotation actually comes from on a stand-up ski, how throttle steers you through an inverted trick, and the progression and bail technique that let you build to it without paying for it.
The Technique
- Rotation comes from the machine, not from your body. On a stand-up ski you are too light relative to the hull to throw it around with muscle, and riders who try end up strong, tired and flat. There are two sources of rotation available to you. A ramp or a wake gives you a takeoff angle: the hull leaves the water already pitched, and the rotation is set before you are airborne. Flat water gives you stored energy: you bury the bow, the hull loads against its own buoyancy, and when you unload it the ski slingshots backward over the tail. Both are the same idea, which is that the ski must already be rotating before it leaves the surface. Nothing useful happens to your rotation once you are in the air with the pump out of the water.
- The setup decides the trick. Approach speed wants to be repeatable rather than fast, because the whole thing is timing. Come in with your weight already forward of neutral, hands low, elbows in, and the ski tracking straight. The pull that starts the rotation is a hip and leg movement against the pole, not an arm pull: you drop your weight back and down and let the pole lever the nose up, while your arms only keep the bars where your hips put them. If you feel it in your biceps you are doing it with the wrong muscles and you will run out inside four attempts. Bar and pole geometry matter enormously here, which is why setup is its own lesson.
