MACHINE FAMILIARISATION & CONTROLS
8 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
The point
After this lesson you can start, stop, steer and stand on a mountain sled correctly, and run a pre-ride check that catches problems in the car park instead of the backcountry.

The Technique
- Meet the controls before the engine runs: thumb throttle on the right, brake lever on the left, kill switch, and the tether cord that cuts the engine if you leave the sled. The tether goes on your wrist or jacket every ride, no exceptions.
- Pre-ride check: track condition and tension, skis and carbides, throttle returns freely, brake bites, fuel and oil, and the tether actually kills the engine when pulled. Test it.
- Riding position is standing, knees bent, elbows up, hips over the tunnel. Sitting is for trails and rest. Standing lets the sled move under you.
Still under the glass
