AVALANCHE SAFETY ESSENTIALS
12 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you understand why sledders are over-represented in avalanche deaths, what the non-negotiable kit is, and how a disciplined group moves through avalanche terrain.
The Technique
- The sled is the problem and the point: it puts you on more slopes, faster, with more triggers per hour than any skier. High-marking and sidehilling put the machine and rider exactly where slabs release.
- The kit baseline: avalanche beacon on your body, not in the sled; probe and shovel in a pack on your back, not under the seat. A buried sled takes your gear with it.
- Beacon discipline: on and transmitting at the trailhead, checked against every riding partner, every single day. A beacon check takes ninety seconds. Do it like a ritual.
- 3 more technique steps
- The 3 mistakes that undo it, with fixes
- The drill that builds the reflex
