SIDEHILLING & HIGH-MARKING
9 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you can hold a controlled line across a slope on one ski, and approach high-marking with a process that respects what it actually is: repeated avalanche exposure.
The Technique
- Sidehilling is balancing the sled on its uphill edge while gravity argues. Stand both feet on the uphill running board, hips over the uphill side, downhill leg ready as an outrigger.
- Counter-steer: bars turned gently downhill hold the sled from climbing out of the line. It feels wrong for the first hour and then it feels like the whole sport.
- Throttle holds the line. Steady, committed throttle keeps the track driving across the slope; chopping it drops the sled downhill. Speed is your stability.
- 3 more technique steps
- The 3 mistakes that undo it, with fixes
- The drill that builds the reflex
- The safety non-negotiables
