READING SNOWPACK FROM THE SADDLE
11 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
The point
After this lesson you can gather real snowpack information while riding a machine that hides most of the usual clues, and know when what you have felt should stop the day.
Half the answer, free
The Technique
- Start honest about the handicap: engine noise masks whumpfs, speed hides cracking, and a track flattens the evidence behind you. A snowbiker has to hunt clues deliberately that a skier trips over by accident.
- Build the engine-off habit: at every regroup and every zone change, kill the engine, pull the helmet off one ear, and spend thirty seconds looking and listening. Recent avalanches on any similar slope are the loudest possible answer.
- Use the ski and track as instruments: shooting cracks from the ski on wind-loaded rolls, the track punching through a stiff surface into soft snow beneath - that stiff-over-soft feel is slab structure, and it is exactly what kills.
