SNOW BIKING · Riding Technique
THROTTLE IS YOUR BALANCE
10 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
The point
After this lesson you can use steady throttle as the thing that holds the bike up in soft snow, and manage the sink-and-wallow moment that catches every converted moto rider.

The Technique
- In soft snow the bike is stable because it is planing, and it is planing because the track is driving. Throttle is therefore not just speed: it is the platform you are standing on. Take it away suddenly and the platform sinks.
- Ride a steady, committed throttle through everything soft. Smooth inputs, no stabs, no panic chops. Where a dirt bike rewards bursts, a snowbike rewards flow.
- The chop-and-sink cycle is the classic trap: rider gets nervous, rolls off, bike sinks and wallows, rider opens the throttle hard, track trenches, bike sinks further. The exit from the cycle is earlier, calmer throttle, not more of it later.
