MULTI-DAY BC TRIP PLANNING

The point
After this lesson you can plan a multi-day BC sled trip properly: route, fuel, loads, weather windows and contingencies, instead of hoping a big day sorts itself out.

The Technique
- Plan backwards from the constraint. On sled expeditions the constraint is usually fuel: know your machine's real consumption in deep snow, which can be multiples of trail consumption, and build the route around fuel points with a hard reserve margin. Confirm typical planning margins with the reviewing pro.
- Route plan in layers: the intended line, an escape route from each leg, and the bail-out points where the trip can be shortened without drama. Distances that are trivial on trail become full days in untracked snow.
- Weather windows rule the schedule. Plan moving days for the stable windows and hold storm days in camp or in the trees. A schedule with no slack is a plan to make bad decisions.
