10 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
The point
After this lesson you can set up the sled, your clothing system and your plan so that darkness and deep cold stay inconvenient instead of becoming dangerous.

The Technique
- Night shrinks every margin: sight distance, terrain reading, group tracking and rescue speed. Ride shorter loops on terrain you know, with more fuel and time in hand than daylight would need.
- The speed rule is sight distance: if you cannot stop within what your lights show, you are outrunning your own information. Say it at the trailhead and hold each other to it.
- Machines get moody in deep cold: throttle cables stiffen, belts crack, carbs and injectors sulk. Warm up properly, re-check throttle return after long stops, and keep tanks topped to fight condensation.
