CHOOSING A 4WD: PLATFORMS, BRANDS AND REMOTE AUSTRALIA

After this lesson you can choose a four wheel drive on platform logic rather than badge loyalty, judge payload and support honestly, and buy for the trips you will really do instead of the ones you picture.
The Technique
- Start with the honest frame. No manufacturer, dealer or accessory maker pays us, and none has influenced this lesson. Australia argues about 4WD brands more than any other vehicle category, and most of that argument is about identity rather than engineering. Every vehicle named here has crossed this continent many times over. Model ranges and specifications change every year, so use this for platform thinking and brand character, then drive the current model, check the compliance plate figures yourself and confirm local dealer and parts support before you buy.
- Get the platform decisions right, because they matter more than the badge. Live axle front ends give more wheel travel and a simpler, more repairable layout, and they trade away on-road ride quality and steering precision. Independent front suspension gives a far better ride, better steering and better manners on the long bitumen legs that make up most of any remote trip, and it trades away some articulation and adds complexity at the front end. Ladder chassis construction is straightforward to modify, repair and load, and it trades away refinement. Monocoque construction is lighter and rides better and is harder to modify heavily. Neither column is correct; they are just different problems.
- Choose between a ute and a wagon deliberately. A ute generally gives you more payload, a separate load area you can carry fuel and recovery gear in, and an easier canopy path. The trade-offs are a longer wheelbase in many cases, a load area exposed to dust and weather unless you seal it, and a rear end that rides poorly when empty. A wagon gives you a secure, sealed, air-conditioned space, better weather protection and usually better rear seat comfort. The trade-offs are lower payload in most cases, everything you carry lives in the cabin with you, and dust sealing becomes a real project. Count how many people and how many nights you will carry, and the answer usually appears.
- Choose the driveline for the country, not the internet. Diesel dominates remote Australia because of torque, range and the simple fact that diesel is the fuel most reliably available at remote roadhouses and stations. Petrol offers refinement and often a lower purchase price, and the trade-off is fuel consumption and range planning that has to be far more careful once you are past the last town. On transmissions, a manual gives you direct control and a simple mental model. A modern automatic gives you smoother low-speed control, better hill descent behaviour with the electronics, and less fatigue in sand and traffic. Riders and drivers argue this endlessly; the honest answer is that both work and you should choose the one you will drive well when you are tired.
- Know the platforms with the deepest following in remote Australia and what each is known for. The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series has an enormous following for its simple, heavy-duty, live axle, ladder chassis layout and its presence on nearly every remote track, with the trade-off being on-road comfort, cabin ergonomics and noise that reflect its working origins. The larger LandCruiser wagons are known for long-distance touring comfort and towing ability, with the trade-off being purchase price, size on tight tracks and a payload that touring builds eat quickly. The Toyota Prado and HiLux have very large followings built on ubiquity and the resulting availability of parts and knowledge, with the trade-off being that popularity brings a price premium and that neither is the most capable option out of the box. The Ford Ranger and Everest have a strong and growing following for their on-road manners, drivetrain refinement and aftermarket depth, with the trade-off being newer electronic complexity that suits some owners less than others. The Isuzu D-Max and MU-X have a loyal following built on a straightforward mechanical package and strong value, with the trade-off being that some buyers want more refinement and more power than the package targets. The Nissan Patrol has two distinct followings: the older live axle models are beloved by the modify-it-yourself crowd for their simplicity and capability, while the current petrol wagon has a devoted group who value its comfort, towing and smooth power, with the trade-off there being fuel range planning. Jeep's Wrangler is known for live axles at both ends, exceptional articulation and a genuine off-road following, with the trade-off being on-road manners and a smaller dealer footprint in remote regions. Land Rover's Defender, in both its old and new forms, has a following built on capability and comfort with a distinctive character, and the trade-off is a thinner remote service network. The Ineos Grenadier has arrived with a live axle, ladder chassis philosophy aimed squarely at this use, and the trade-off is a young support network and a small used market. The Suzuki Jimny has a devoted following for its light weight, short wheelbase and low cost, with the trade-off being payload, load space and highway comfort. Newer entrants including GWM, LDV and others are gaining ground on value and specification, and the trade-off is a shorter local history and a network still building out.
- Understand why the most common vehicle on a track is often the most sensible choice for that track. This is the least romantic and most useful idea in the lesson. In remote country, the vehicle you can get a part for is worth more than the vehicle with the better spec sheet. If a platform is common on the tracks you will drive, then a wheel bearing, a hub, a hose or an alternator is more likely to be behind a counter in the next town, more likely to be in somebody else's spares box in the convoy, and more likely to be something the local workshop has fitted before. That is not brand loyalty. It is logistics.
- Take payload, GVM and towing seriously, because this is where most builds come undone. Every vehicle has a kerb weight and a gross vehicle mass, and the difference is your payload, which has to cover people, fuel, water, food, tools, recovery gear, the bull bar, the drawers, the fridge, the roof rack and the rooftop tent. Touring builds routinely exceed payload without the owner realising. Read the compliance plate for the actual vehicle you are buying, weigh the vehicle loaded at a public weighbridge, and treat any figure from a forum as a guess. If you plan to tow, look at gross combination mass as well, because many vehicles cannot carry their maximum payload and tow their maximum load at the same time. Suspension and GVM upgrades exist and are worth investigating, and they need to be engineered and legal in your state.
- Judge aftermarket support depth as part of the purchase. Some platforms have decades of bar work, suspension, drawers, canopies, long range tanks, dual battery kits and diff locks available off the shelf, which means faster builds, more choice and better prices. Newer or less common platforms have thinner catalogues, which means waiting, importing or paying for custom work. The same applies to knowledge: a platform with a long history has a deep pool of people who have solved the problem you are about to have.
- Decide on the trips you will actually do. Write down your realistic next two years: how many nights away, how many people, whether you tow, how much of the driving is bitumen, and how far you will genuinely be from a town. Most owners drive far more bitumen and far less remote track than they imagine when they are shopping. Buy for the honest version. Then drive the current model, on dirt if you can, check the compliance plate figures, and ring the dealers and workshops in the regions you plan to travel to and ask what they can support.
Common Mistakes
Buying for the trip you imagine rather than the trips you book. Fix: write down your real travel plan for two years and buy for that, then hire or borrow for the once-in-a-decade expedition.
- Building without weighing. Fix: weigh the vehicle loaded at a weighbridge before your first long trip and again after the build is finished, and cut gear until the numbers are legal.
- Assuming maximum payload and maximum towing can happen together. Fix: check gross combination mass as well as gross vehicle mass and do the arithmetic before you buy the van.
- Choosing a platform with no local support because it looked more capable. Fix: ring workshops along your intended route and ask what they can service and what they can get.
- Spending the whole budget on the vehicle and none on tyres, suspension and recovery gear. Fix: budget the build and the training at the same time as the vehicle, because tyres and driver skill change outcomes more than the badge does.
The Drill
Run a remote support audit before you buy. Pick your two shortlisted platforms and pick a real destination you intend to reach. Find the three towns along that route with a workshop, ring each and ask what they can service and what common parts they can get and how fast. Then book a test drive of each shortlisted vehicle that includes at least thirty minutes of dirt and one steep loose descent, and score five things out of five afterwards - visibility over the bonnet, low-speed control, ride quality on corrugations, how easy the vehicle was to place on a narrow line, and how tired you were. Finally, get each vehicle's compliance plate figures and do the payload sum for your actual gear list.
A vehicle that suits you and your load is safer than a more capable one that does not. An overloaded 4WD steers badly, brakes badly and breaks components, and overloading is the most common safety problem on remote tracks. Setup and servicing beat badge every time: correct tyres for the terrain and correct tyre pressures, sound recovery points, serviced brakes and suspension matched to how you actually load the vehicle. Carry communications suitable for where you are going, do a recovery course, travel with a plan somebody else knows, and check parts and service support along your intended route before you commit to a platform.
