WINCHING AND SNATCHING: THE RECOVERY THAT KILLS PEOPLE

After this lesson you can recognise an unsafe vehicle recovery before it starts, set up the exclusion zone and the chain of command that make it safe, and call a stop with authority when something is wrong.
The Technique
- **Understand what you are actually holding: stored energy.** A snatch strap works because it stretches. A loaded winch line works because it holds tension. In both cases you are putting a very large amount of energy into a line and then standing near it. While the load is on, that energy has nowhere to go. If a strap tears, a shackle fails, a recovery point rips out of the body, or a hook lets go, all of that energy releases along the line in an instant and drives whatever is attached back toward the vehicle at the other end. A steel shackle, a broken hook, a tow ball or a torn off recovery point becomes a projectile that goes through sheet metal, glass and people. This is a leading cause of death and serious injury in four wheel driving, and the pattern in most incidents is the same: unrated gear, a person standing in the wrong place, or both. Almost all of it is preventable, and none of the prevention is complicated.
- **Rated or not rated is the first question, every single time.** A rated recovery point is designed, tested and marked for recovery loads, and it is bolted or welded directly to the chassis with the correct grade of fastener, fitted the way the maker specifies. A tie down point, a transport lashing eye or a light hook on the bumper is for holding a vehicle still on a truck, not for a shock load, and it will let go. Shackles must be rated and stamped, either a proper bow shackle with a working load limit marked on it or a rated soft shackle with a tag, not a galvanised look alike from a hardware shelf. A tow ball is never a recovery point, at any time, for any recovery, on any vehicle. A tow ball that lets go is one of the classic killers and it does not need to be a hard pull to do it. If a vehicle has no rated recovery point fitted, you do not snatch it. You dig, use boards, or winch from a point that is rated, and you get proper points fitted before the next trip. Learn where the rated points are on every vehicle in your convoy before you leave the bitumen, not while one of them is buried.
- **Match the gear to the vehicle, and inspect it before you trust it.** A snatch strap is sized to the weight of the vehicle being recovered, and a quality strap carries a label with its rating and the weight band it suits. Size for the vehicle as it is loaded for the trip, with fuel, water, fridge and gear on board, not for the empty weight in the brochure. Both errors hurt you. A strap that is too light simply breaks. A strap that is too heavy for the vehicle barely stretches, so instead of easing the vehicle out it transfers a hard shock straight into the recovery points and rips them off. Before every trip, and again before every use, run the whole strap through your hands and look at it in daylight. Retire it for cuts, nicks on the edges, abrasion, fraying, melted or glazed patches, stitching coming apart, oil or fuel contamination, faded and stiff webbing from sun exposure, or any sign it has been over stretched, which shows up as a strap that has gone hard, lost its give and grown permanently longer. Do the same for winch line: broken strands, kinks or birdcaging in steel cable, core damage, glazing or heavy fuzz in synthetic rope. Never knot a strap or a rope. If you are in any doubt about a piece of gear, it is finished. It is cheap to replace and it is not cheap to be wrong.
- **Put a damper on every loaded line, and put it in the right place.** A damper is a weighted blanket or a purpose made bag laid over the line while it is under load. It does two things. It adds weight and drag along the line so that if something fails, the failed line and hardware are pulled down toward the ground rather than whipping through the air at head height, and it marks the line clearly so everyone can see exactly where the danger sits. It is a mitigation, not a guarantee, and a damper does not make a bad rig safe. Lay it over the line near the middle. On a long line, or a winch pull with a lot of cable out, use one over each half. If you are using a bridle across two recovery points, treat each leg as a line. Do not improvise with something hard and heavy like a toolbox or a rock, because you have then added a second projectile. Every loaded line gets one, on every recovery, including the short easy one you are only doing because the vehicle is nearly out already.
- **Set an exclusion zone and hold it.** Nobody stands in line with a strap or a cable, in either direction, ever. The danger extends beyond both vehicles along that axis, so being behind the recovery vehicle is not safe and neither is being off to the front of the stuck one. Everyone who is not driving stands well off to the side, outside the zone, and stays there for the whole recovery. A common rule of thumb taught in recovery training is to stand back at least one and a half times the length of the line, in every direction, and further is better. Nobody stands between the two vehicles. Nobody steps over a loaded line, ever, for any reason. Nobody sits on a bonnet or a bull bar to watch. Passengers, kids, dogs and anyone filming go out of the zone first, before the gear comes out, and the phone footage gets shot from where the person is already safe. Bystanders drift, so one person owns the zone and moves people back without arguing about it.
- **One controller, agreed signals, confirmed readiness, and anyone can stop it.** Before any gear is unrolled, the group names one recovery controller. That person plans the recovery, checks the gear and the attachment points, places the dampers, sets the zone, and is the only person who tells a driver to apply load. Agree hand signals in advance, at minimum load on, stop, and slack off, and use them, because a running engine and wind mean nobody hears anything. If you use radios, agree one channel and keep it silent except for the recovery, with short and clear calls. Before load goes on, the controller does a final walk and check: attachment points confirmed as rated and correctly fitted, shackles done up and backed off a quarter turn, dampers placed, drivers ready and belted, everyone else outside the zone and visible, and each person confirms. Then, and only then, load goes on. Every person present has the authority to call stop, and when anyone calls it, everything stops immediately, load comes off, and the reason gets discussed. Nobody is ever made to feel awkward for calling a stop. A group that cannot say stop is not doing a controlled recovery, it is having an accident slowly.
- **Winching is slow, deliberate work.** Choose the anchor first. A live tree with a good root base gets a wide tree trunk protector strap low around the trunk, and the winch line attaches to the protector with a rated shackle or soft shackle. Never wrap the cable around a tree, and never hook the line back onto itself. In open country the anchor may be another vehicle, chocked, in gear, with the park brake on and its own rated point used, or a ground anchor. Walk the line out by hand in freespool rather than dragging it, and wear gloves. Never let the line run through your hands, and keep fingers well away from the fairlead and the drum, because a finger caught between line and drum is gone before you can react. Use a hook strap to handle the hook. Under load, watch the line spool on the drum in neat layers, and if it piles up on one side, stop, take the load off and reset it rather than continuing. Leave the number of wraps on the drum that the winch maker specifies as the minimum, so the line cannot pull off the anchor point on the drum. A pulley block lets you redirect a pull or double the line to halve the load on the winch, and doubling is often the right answer when the pull is heavy. Winch slowly, in stages, with the vehicle in gear and gentle throttle only if the controller asks for it. Stop and check regularly. Never step over a loaded winch line, and never stand under a line that is elevated. Walk around, or take the load off first.
- **Snatching is a technique with hard rules, and it is not a run up.** Two snatch straps must never be joined with a shackle. If the join fails, the shackle flies down the line as a lump of steel. If a longer reach is needed, use a longer strap, reposition, or winch instead. If joining is genuinely unavoidable and you have been trained in the soft join method, use that method and nothing else. Line the two vehicles up as straight as you can, avoid angled snatches, and attach only to rated recovery points at both ends. Lay the strap out flat with no knots and no twists, leaving only a modest amount of slack laid out on the ground as your training and the strap maker direct. Then the first attempt is gentle. Roll on, do not charge. The stuck driver drives out gently at the same time under the controller's signal. If the vehicle moves a little, repeat gently and take it in stages. If two or three progressive attempts do nothing, stop. Something is holding the vehicle that more speed will not fix, and more speed multiplies the load enormously. Get out and look, dig it out, clear the ruts, lower tyre pressures, use recovery boards, or rig a winch. Only the drivers stay in the vehicles, belted and with the windows up, unless the briefing on the day says otherwise. Never snatch off a tow ball, never snatch on a winch cable, and never use a non stretch tow strap as a snatch strap or a snatch strap as a tow strap.
- **The judgement layer is where most of the safety actually lives.** Nearly every recovery that goes wrong was avoidable much earlier than the moment of failure. It was avoidable by walking the obstacle and choosing a different line, by lowering tyre pressures before the soft section instead of after, by digging for ten minutes, by laying boards, by taking the winch out instead of reaching for the strap, or by simply deciding not to drive it. The safest recovery is the one you never needed. Build the habit of stopping the vehicle and getting out to look, because from the driver's seat everything looks flatter and firmer than it is. When a vehicle does get stuck, the first move is not gear, it is a look under the vehicle to see what is actually holding it, because a chassis resting on a mound is a digging problem, not a pulling one. And leave with this rule above all the others. If anything about a recovery feels rushed or improvised, stop. If someone is hurrying because of fading light, a tide, a schedule or an audience, stop. If gear is being substituted for something it was not made for, stop. There is almost never a genuine time pressure in a remote recovery, and the few minutes you spend rerigging properly are the cheapest minutes of the whole trip.
Common Mistakes
Hooking a strap to a tow ball, a tie down eye or a bumper hook. Fix: rated recovery points only, and if there are none fitted, dig, use boards or winch from a rated point instead.
- Joining two snatch straps with a shackle. Fix: never do it. Use a longer strap, reposition, or winch, and use only a trained soft join if a join is truly unavoidable.
- Taking a run up because gentle attempts did not work. Fix: gentle and progressive only, and if progressive attempts fail, change method rather than adding speed.
- Skipping the damper on a short or easy recovery. Fix: a damper on every loaded line, every time, placed over the middle.
- Filming from behind or beside a vehicle, in line with the strap. Fix: everyone outside the exclusion zone before the gear is unrolled, cameras included.
- Stepping over a loaded winch line to get to the other side. Fix: walk right around, or take the load off first.
- Three people giving instructions at once while a driver guesses. Fix: one controller, agreed hand signals, confirmed readiness before any load goes on.
- Using a strap that has lived under the ute tray for years without inspecting it. Fix: inspect the full length before every trip and again before every use, and retire it on any doubt.
- Reaching for recovery gear before looking under the vehicle. Fix: get out, look, and decide whether digging or boards solve it without a loaded line at all.
The Drill
Run a full dry rig in camp or a car park with no load applied. Pick a vehicle as the stuck one and a second as the recovery vehicle. The group names a controller, then each person walks to their own vehicle and physically points at its rated recovery points and says the rating of the strap they carry and the weight of their vehicle as loaded. Lay out the strap or winch line, fit the shackles, place the dampers, and pace out the exclusion zone at one and a half times the line length, marking it with a couple of jerry cans or sticks. The controller runs the hand signals and the readiness check out loud, person by person. Then, at a random moment, a person chosen beforehand calls stop. The standard is that every person can find and name their rated points without hunting, that no person is inside the marked zone at the readiness check, that every loaded line has a correctly placed damper, and that a stop call from anyone brings the whole scene to a halt within about two seconds with no argument and no one finishing what they were doing first. Run it again with the roles swapped so the quietest person in the group has been the controller at least once.
Recovery gear failure is a leading cause of serious injury and death in four wheel driving, and it kills bystanders as often as it hurts drivers. This lesson is general education. It is not a certification and it does not replace hands on training. Do an accredited practical four wheel drive recovery course with an instructor, with real gear, before you rely on any of this in the field. On any guided trip, the recovery is run by the trip leader or guide, and the briefing you are given on the day sets who does what, where you stand and which gear is used. That briefing overrides anything written here. If you are asked to help and you are not confident, say so, and stand outside the zone. Standing back is always an acceptable answer.
