The point

The Technique
- Winching is slow and controlled - that is its whole advantage. If it feels rushed, something is wrong.
- Gear check: a winch rated for the vehicle - around one and a half times GVM is a common spec, confirm with the reviewing pro - and a line in good condition. Frayed or kinked line retires. Synthetic rope stores less whip energy than steel cable, but both demand the same respect.
- Anchor: a healthy tree with a rated tree-trunk protector around its base, another vehicle braked and chocked, or a ground anchor. Never bare line around a tree - it kills the tree and the line.
- Rigging: rated shackles, dampener over the line, and a snatch block or ring to double the line when the pull is heavy - a doubled line pulls harder and slower, which is what you want. Keep the minimum wraps on the drum per the maker - confirm the number with the pro.
