HEAT FITNESS FOR THE CAPE & THE OUTBACK

The point
Heat tolerance is trainable, the adaptation is graded and predictable, and you want it built before day one on the track, not during it.

The Technique
- The principle: repeated moderate exercise in warm conditions over roughly one to two weeks drives real adaptation - you start sweating sooner, you hold a lower core temperature, work feels easier. It is graded exposure, never heroics.
- The protocol: in your final two weeks, do four to six of your normal easy cardio sessions in warm conditions - a warm time of day, or slightly overdressed on cool days. Keep the effort easy to moderate; heat plus intensity is the combination that hurts people.
- Practise drinking on the move during these sessions. On the trip you will need to drink to a plan, not to thirst, and that habit takes rehearsal.
