7 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
The point
After this lesson you can plan fuel for a remote leg with a margin that covers sand, detours and mistakes.

The Technique
- Know your real consumption: loaded, on dirt, not the brochure figure. Fill, ride 100 km of representative terrain, refill, do the maths.
- Terrain multiplier: sand and technical going push consumption up hard - a third or more is common. Confirm typical multipliers with the reviewing pro.
- Plan legs, not trips: fuel available here, next fuel there, distance between, worst-case consumption, then margin.
- Margin rule: carry meaningfully beyond the calculated worst case - 20 to 30 percent is a common floor. Confirm with the pro. Never plan to arrive empty.
