The Technique
- Run layers: GPS or phone app as primary, paper map and compass as backup, and the day's route held roughly in your head. Any single layer fails.
- Before the trip: download offline maps for the whole region and load waypoints for fuel, water, camps, decision points and escape routes.
- Waypoint discipline on the move: mark the trailhead, every junction where you'd hesitate, and every water source you pass. Name them so they make sense when you are tired at 4 pm.
- The junction habit: confirm position at every junction, not once doubt sets in. It is the cheap habit that prevents the expensive mistake.
